FASHFEST Model Casting 2016

HerCanberra Team

If there’s any sign that FASHFEST is well and truly gearing up, it’s the holding of the annual model casting.

And that casting, which has already smashed last year’s record by a long shot, is being held this Sunday 22 May. More than 400 models have already registered, exceeding last year’s final total of 300. And the number keeps rising.

So if you’re a model, or want to give the casting a go, hop on to www.fashfest.com.au and get yourself registered. Applicants have to be 16 years of age on the day of the model casting. There’s no upper age restriction.

FASHFEST holds an ‘open model casting’ every year, which means hopefuls don’t have to have heaps of experience or be signed with an agency.

“We’re big on training and so look for those with great potential,” says Andrea Hutchinson, model director for HAUS Models and one of five judges who will spend the day watching the hundreds of models manage their nerves and work their way along the makeshift runway at the National Convention Centre.

“Posture is key. Ability to walk smoothly and with poise is key. An ability to shine with confidence is also key,” says Andrea. “We look for models who are enjoying themselves but who understand the importance of their role in showcasing designer fashion on the catwalk. We love personality. We love diversity.”

Andrea is on the panel with the owners of Canberra’s two other top modelling agencies, Tina Nikolovski from Devojka Models and Victoria Schnabl from Victoria’s Models.

Also on the panel is internationally renowned, high-fashion photographer, Robert Coppa and Hayley O’Neill, who many know well from HerCanberra! Hayley still styles shoots with us but is also in heaven working in her dream job in Sydney as Fashion Office Coordinator at Marie Claire Australia.

The models will walk to music organised by FASHFEST’s official music director, Ashley Feraude, who will be joined by Hamish Lardi and NeonHoney.

“We’re there to give the models a very small taste of what they might hear at the show from a DJing perspective and a live perspective,” says Ashley. “Aside from that it’s about keeping the energy up so that the models feel good and do their best.”

While the model casting is serious business, it’s also a fun day for all the models. Wonder how many selfies will be snapped?
