Get The Look: Seventies Style

HerCanberra Team

On the first weekend of spring what better time to dust off the Torana and do a 70’s inspired photoshoot, which made me feel incredibly nostalgic.

What better place to do it than in Canberra, which we all know really brings it for the seasons! As a mum I often tell my kids stories about ‘the good ol days’ when my sister and I would get our terry-towelling shorts on and skate around the culdesac to the Zanadu soundtrack. I even stock up on raspberry and cola sunnyboys once the warm weather comes because it ‘takes me back’.

So when throwing around concepts for a photoshoot I was deadset keen in bringing the 70’s back! My inspiration boards were a mix of Charlie’s Angels, Holden car ads, Dukes of Hazzard and Puberty Blues as well as some of today’s boho looks.

It then became very clear I wasn’t bringing the 70s back –  it’s already back in trend in a big way! With spring arriving, every fashion shop in the mall right now is featuring some form of flared jeans, vintage style T’s and boho influenced dresses and jumpsuits. I cannot tell you how excited I am – we have seen the 80s come back, the 50s and 60s rockabilly never really leaves for some but the 70s feels a little forgotten.

I gathered my creative team together over a chiko roll and the creative juices just seemed to flow. We all agreed this look comes from a place that was innocent, fun, fresh-faced and warm and as mums ourselves it’s a refreshing and spring zingy kinda look we would happily have our teen girls wear.

How did we get the look?

Kimi Sanders, make up artist, says…

“I love the 70’s theme! With the makeup I tried to go for a modern twist to the 70’s style. I used lots of highlight so the girls were really glowy which is essential for Spring and Summer. I was particularly inspired by Charlies Angels for Taylah so I went for a smoky cat eye. With Billie I added a pop of green. They both looked fun and fresh.”

Hair was styled by Hayley Croft from Rockabilly Boutique in Fyshwick. Hayley was thrilled to do the hair for this shoot, telling me “Nothing makes me happier than the fact that old is becoming new and modern again. This 70s look is bright and fun free-spirit with a little bit of modern boho thrown in.”

“With Taylah, I also took inspiration from Charlie’s Angels (Farrah Fawcett especially), but let the curls stay defined to keep it modern and fresh. For Billie, I wanted to give her a sleeker, more defined look but still with the same fresh feel,” says Hayley.
