Home Stories: Pat Rose

Ashley Feraude and Bel Combridge

I’ve known Pat for over 10 years, but always in an enigmatic way.

He has popped up in my life at different bars, design-related events, fashion things and music gigs—but still, I could never articulate what he actually did. I always assumed that he was either a massive socialite type or a man with wide-ranging interests.

Whichever it was, I figured his place would be fun to visit, so when I ran into him during my recent DJ set, I invited myself and Bel, our photographer, in for a visit and fact-finding mission. Pat shares his home with three women; all of whom are late-20-something professionals that he has been friends with for years. When I asked if the gender balance was working out, he just said “Yep, I’m quite the freak when it comes to cleaning”. You have to admit, it’s a set up worthy of a sitcom.

It’s great to know that share houses are not just for students —and, in fact, many people choose to share homes as a means of making and keeping good friends, getting a helping hand with the mortgage and avoiding those lonely moments on Sunday nights in front of the TV.

What’s also cool about them is that they become a melting pot of different tastes—and in this case, we have a fun fusion of bohemian, designer, arty and classic. Much of that is attributed to the original architecture of the 1930s-era home, but it wouldn’t come alive if it wasn’t for the quaint additions of each housemate.

The biggest surprise for me was Pat’s bedroom; a Japanese-influenced set up with a neat aesthetic, small size and functionality. It really started to remind me of the kind of set up designers have, so I figured this was the perfect moment to spin a question about what he actually does.

The answer was a bit of everything; essentially, he is an architect and a graphic designer, he also ran a street clothing label, managed bars (HaHa Bar), put on alternative parties (Chop Shop) and managed artists such as Ta-Kun-Da. Right now, he is doing design consulting work for specific government projects.

Okay, so I’m  glad I got to the bottom of that mystery. Next time I’m not going to wait 10 years to ask though.
