MUJI is coming to Canberra!

Amanda Whitley

Cult Japanese brand MUJI is coming to Canberra Centre. Here’s why you should care.

I was visiting a friend in Singapore in 2014, doing the compulsory shopping thing, when she said to me ‘we HAVE to go to MUJI‘. I had no idea what she was talking about. None.

Four years on, I have worn the linen sweater I bought so many times it’s literally not fit to be seen in public, and MUJI’s store in The Galeries on George Street has become a must-visit each Sydney trip. It doesn’t offer online shopping, so a three-hour trip is the sacrifice for MUJI goodness.

Well, until now. Because it’s coming to Canberra. I am beside myself.

So, what it is? Well, according to MUJI, the brand was “originally founded in Japan in 1980, and MUJI offers a wide variety of good quality products including household goods, apparel and food.”

MUJI in Japanese, translates as “no-brand quality goods”. There are more than 800 stores around the world, with more than 7,000 items ranging from clothing and household goods to food and even houses.

The items are minimalist, low-cost and timeless with a distinct Japanese aesthetic. You will pretty much want one of everything.

Advertisements for staff have just appeared on seek.com.au, with training due to commence in June 2018. MUJI is set to open in August 2018. Start clearing space in your wardrobe now.
