Nailed it: Summer nail trends

HerCanberra Team

There’s nothing more chic than a manicured hand wrapped around a cocktail in summer.

Chip-free, bright and always shiny, getting your nails done in summer means night after night of them looking their best as you swing through a myriad of social commitments.

We spoke to nail art and beauty queen Jessica Peris from The Beautique by Jessica Peris (seriously, she can even do marble and willow pattern!) about what sort of nails we’ll be seeing around (and getting) this summer.

What trends do you forecast being big this summer?

This summer I think we’re going to see a lot more funky-cool vibe designs coming our way. We’re feeling bold pastels with cute illustrations like pineapples, palm leaves, cacti—kind of ‘holiday’ inspired. I think watercolours and ombrés are still going to be popular, as well as the nude/naked nail with minimalist accents using either simple embellishments, foil or glitter.

This year, it seemed runway nails had an “all or nothing” approach being either super-minimal or all out.

What are the key colours?

I call them “in between” colours—peach, powder blue, mustard yellow, mint. I think nudes will continue through to summer, especially when paired with bolder feature nails or designs.

What are some of the benefits of having gel polish?

When applied correctly, we see our clients’ nails last for two to six weeks. This is because the gel polish gets cured under an LED lamp, so there’s no need to worry about destroying them whilst getting your wallet out of your bag!

They also stay super-shiny and if they are well maintained, they provide extra protection to help stop your natural nails from breaking.

How have nail art trends changed since last summer?

Last year we were still seeing a lot of geometric, which we still love, but I think we’re going to be heading somewhere a bit more literal when it comes to designs. I also think there’s a bit of a shapeshift going on—more clients are warming to the oval-shaped nails, but also a classic, natural style round.

What are some of your personal favourite details and polishes you love putting on your clients in summer?

I love foliage, so palm leaves, cacti and florals are always a favourite during summer. It’s also fun when we get our regular “nudists” choose a bright colour for the warmer weather!

We use Gelish gel polish in our studio, and an all-time favourite shade which would have to be our most popular colour ever is Pink Smoothie. It’s just an all-round perfect pastel pink.

What do you love about doing nails?

It’s about making our clients happy, and giving them something to get excited about, even if it is a small thing. Getting your nails done is just such an easy pick-me-up, and it lasts more than just the day/night so you can have time to enjoy them. I’m a big believer in women taking the time out to take care of themselves, and having your nails done is a sure sign of that.

It’s also really fulfilling when a client walks out of our studio saying they love their nails, or when we hear they received compliments on their last set. Our nails are like an accessory we can carry with us everywhere—and we love that people want to wear our art!

Get in touch with Jess if you have any more questions about nail art or gel nails or to make an appointment! The Beautique also offer spray tanning services as well as gel polish on toes.
