A stylish moment with Talisa Sutton

Laura Peppas

At just 26 years old, Talisa Sutton has already nailed down a pretty impressive resume.

The former Canberra girl cut her teeth at Sydney’s FBI Fashion College, before working as a designer at ELLE Australia and later, Vogue as an Australia Creative Consultant. In 2010 Talisa founded Badlands, a popular fashion and lifestyle blog evolving from her love of visual diaries. Needless to say, she’s been busy. On 4 June Talisa will host a Style Masterclass at Canberra Centre, where she will share her top fashion, interior, travel and beauty tips, including how to buy timeless pieces for your wardrobe and the best ways to style your home. Before her visit, we caught up with the style influencer.

Any hints as to what we’ll be seeing more of this winter season for both the home and wardrobe?

I think there are similar colours coming across for both which is interesting. For home, I’m loving tonal shades of grey, from a light dove grey to charcoal, alongside ivory, navy and natural warm camel tones. Adding a little texture is perfect for winter, whether it’s a new throw with tasseled detailing or a shearling to drape over your office chair, it creates a cosy, warm feeling which is perfect for winter.

For fashion – I’m loving camel coats, leather and suede, a nod to the 90’s layering (think camis over turtlenecks and slip dresses layered with a long sleeve tee and a big coat), statement earrings, jewel-tones and cosy oversized knits.

How would you describe your style?

I think my style is quite classic. I love minimal, monochrome pieces but I’ll pare dressier looks back with sneakers and denim – I still like to mix it up.

What are you currently lusting after?

A black Gucci Dionysus bag is top of my list!

How did your interest in design begin?

I have always loved fashion, my mother is very stylish so I grew up surrounded by her beautiful shoes and accessories. It wasn’t until I was a bit older though that I realised I wanted it to be my career – I always saw myself being a fashion designer but ended up falling into the styling/magazine world instead. It was around this time I met my now husband, he was working as a graphic designer for a fashion company which prompted me to go and study graphics too. Through studying design and then later Fine Arts, my love and appreciation for graphics, contemporary art, film and architecture really grew.

What prompted you to launch Badlands?

Badlands evolved out of my love for visual diaries. I had been making collage-filled books since high school where I would piece together inspiration, magazine tears and illustrations. I had such a small apartment, and a big stack of books so it was time for me to take things online! It was a great way for me to document my favourite editorials, films, photography and share some of my personal work while I was studying graphic design.

Where do you draw most of your inspiration come from?

Travel is definitely the main one, I love exploring new cities and taking in their architecture, surroundings and museums/galleries. Recently I had amazing experiences at The Broad in Los Angeles and The Louisiana in Copenhagen – I love art and I think it speaks so much to design and fashion.

What has been the highlights of your career so far?

There have been so many, I feel very lucky. Coming on board for the re-launch of ELLE in Australia was a great opportunity, I worked in the art department there and was able to learn and grow so much as a designer. Also being able to start out my own as a full-time blogger and freelance designer – for my first week of self employment I was in New Zealand for their fashion week, and then I went on to New York for NYFW. It was such an amazing experience to get to be on the ground covering the shows.

Any exciting projects coming up?

There are quite a few things in the works for the blog. My husband and I are working on an exciting new project together which we’ll be launching very soon too!
