Tip You’re It and the terrific twos

Ashleigh Went

Since opening their Braddon doors on 16 April 2015, Tip You’re It! has become a store that’s synonymous with quirky, cute and downright delightful children’s clothing, toys and décor.

Two-and-a-half years on, they’re known as one of Canberra’s most stylish kid’s stores—a status that was cemented earlier this year at FASHFEST, when a troupe of adorable children strutted down the runway in the most stylish ensembles.

Shop owners and parents Che and Trev have worked hard to develop a shop and concept that’s all its own, stocking a range of products that are anything but generic.

“We continually strive to keep the range as fresh and relevant to our market through refining our offer to bring in new brands and retiring others,” explains Trev.

“First we look to brands that have not traditionally been stocked in Canberra. Fair trade and ethical production is non-negotiable. Natural products (organic cottons for clothing, leather for shoes, wooden toys, etc.) is really important to us also.”

The store’s feel good, high quality, high style appeal hasn’t gone unnoticed by shoppers locally and further afield, with a loyal fan base that continues to grow.

“Without a shadow of a doubt,” explains Trev, “the single greatest part of operating our own business is the friendships we have built with our customers.

“To be able to help and advise parents-to-be with styling their nurseries and then see these growing families come back to us for clothes, first shoes, first birthday presents and more is an amazing thing. We absolutely cherish the people who have supported our store since we opened.”

The couple couldn’t have picked a better location, with an enchanting shopfront that attracts shoppers with its bright and cheerful aesthetic.

“We knew we wanted a premium location to launch the store —and it doesn’t get more prime than Lonsdale Street. As loyal northsiders, we felt that Braddon was a fantastic fit with the brand mix we had put together.”

Trev and Che said that the idea for Tip You’re It had been percolating for a number of years before the store opened its doors, and has been a labour of love.

“While there are many trade-offs in working a small, family business (read: ‘no family holiday in three years, a badly-in-need-of-renovating house remaining unrenovated, working seven days a week’) we genuinely love and are immensely proud of what we’ve created with Tip You’re It! and we hope to keep helping mini-Canberrans happy and stylish for years to come.”

While everything in their store is beautiful, there are a few brands and products that really stood out to us when considering our Christmas lists. Here are our favourite picks for gifts this season.

Have a Nice Day handmade timber toys

In a world where we all—children included—spend our days in front of a screen, it feels a little bit special to gift something handmade and a little bit retro.

These toys are designed and handmade in Australia, so if you’re all about supporting local, you can rest easy knowing that your dollars are supporting fellow Australians.

There’s also a strong educational element to the toys. Children are actually required to put the toys together before playing with them, which builds a stronger emotional connection to the toy and provides a sensory experience. If your child enjoys the building experience, the toys can be dismantled and built again for future play.

Prices range from $55 to $160.

Tiba + Marl Baby Bags

I don’t have a baby, but I do have a love of bags, and when I laid eyes on these I thought “I have to have one.” The bag, that is—not the baby.

That’s the best thing about Tiba + Marl’s range—they don’t look anything like your traditional nappy bag—and many of the designs are unisex so you won’t find dad clutching a fluffy pink nappy bag.

The shapes are trend-driven and include sports-luxe backpacks, stylish tote bags, modern satchels. They even have a changing clutch that looks like a sleek, glam clutch from the outside that folds out into a changing mat with a removable, washable fleece mat.

Prices from $215 to $245

Phoenix and the Fox

Shopping for kids (especially babies) clothes is surely one of life’s greatest pleasures. Phoenix and the Fox makes the experience even more delightful, with their Fair Verona collection, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Baz Luhrman’s Romeo + Juliet.

What could be cuter than the Memphis Dress and matching shorties in the too-cute-for-words Star Cross’d Lovers print, featuring fresh faced Leo and Claire.

Memphis Dress $65, matching shorties $40

Sack Me Slumber Sacks

Summer is the perfect time to buy a new sleeping bag, what with sleepovers, visits to the grandparents, impromptu coast trips…

Sack Me are famous for their fun and playful prints (think confetti, sundaes and sprinkles and my personal favourite, the Krispy Kreme donut print) and now they’re available in portable sleeping bags.

They’re not just Instagram-worthy, but practical too with a plush layer of filling and canvas handle—you can even roll out the pillow compartment for some extra room for taller kids. They also make a great sleeping solution for day care, or even just for lounging about at home.

Slumber Sacks, $150
