Real wedding: Phillipa and Bruce

HerCanberra Team
Phillipa and Bruce’s wedding epitomised rustic charm, featuring an intimate ceremony at the Elm grove at Royalla, and a reception at the couple’s property just down the road. Phillipa takes us through the day.

Getting ready

I got ready at my friend’s place. My current hairdresser came to the house and did my hair and make-up. I highly recommend this approach as it was very relaxing and I didn’t have to run around from place to place (also a handy place to store my dress in the lead up so no one else saw it).

The dress

I chose the dress because it suited me and my shape first and foremost. I’m quite petite and I really wanted a dress with shoulder straps. After that I wasn’t too fussed – I just didn’t want to feel like a powder puff in it. I loved that it flowed lightly from the waist and suited the outdoor rustic style. I wanted a simple, elegant dress and fortunately, I found it during the first dress shopping outing.

The ceremony

Luckily, the Elm Grove at the Royalla Common [had] a ceremony arch and seating, which is just down the road from our property, where the reception was held.

Logistically this made it so easy for us and our guests.

We didn’t want to spend too long having photos taken, as we just wanted to make sure we captured some special moments (which we did!) and spend more time with our friends.

 P&B-357-2The reception

We held the reception at our property at Royalla because it suited the rustic, casual theme. We also had lots of children coming so it was great to have space for them play.
I chose a style for the reception that suited our house and our theme.
The general atmosphere was very relaxed, there were no set timings for anything other than the start of the ceremony, so we were happy to just let the afternoon roll into dinner. We both wanted the reception to be more like a party with our friends and family than a formal gathering.
I got all the flowers from a wholesaler (delivered to Canberra) and then made all the arrangements (with help from family), except the lavender which was from our garden. Knowing that the flowers don’t last that long anyway, I just couldn’t justify spending thousands of dollars on them.
There is definitely money to be saved by choosing to DIY, especially for table decorations and wedding guest gifts, but they take time to make.
