ACTIVE Week: Burley Griffin Canoe Club

The Burley Griffin Canoe Club (BGCC) is home to the Olympic disciplines of canoe and kayak in the Canberra region.

The Club has over 140 members, including Australian champions and aspiring Olympians as well as recreational paddlers who want to enjoy one of Australia’s most beautiful waterways.

Club members train together in small squads to prepare for individual and team events in state and national competitions. Sprint canoe paddlers also frequently train with coach and Olympian Sebastian Marczak (London, 2012) at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

BGCC is keen to build its sprint canoe contingent, which is growing rapidly in Australia, particularly since women’s events have been included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Athletes compete in open boats paddled from a kneeling position with a single-blade paddle (as opposed to kayaks, where athletes sit with their legs extended, using a double-blade paddle).

ACTIVE Week offer

The Burley Griffin Canoe Club is holding a free Canoe Draft event so more people can experience this amazing sport.

Saturday 18 November: 8am-12pm

What to expect

BGCC is looking for fit, competitive people to join its sprint canoe squad. The squad currently includes state and national champions who train up to six days a week.

If you are interested in a new, challenging sport and love chasing big goals, BGCC can help! They need new members who want to paddle competitively in individual and team events.

Canoes, paddles and life jackets will be provided.
