UN Women International Women’s Day Lunch

International Women’s Day is fast approaching along with a myriad of events around the nation, most notably UN Women Australia Canberra Lunch.

While International Women’s Day has become a time to reflect on the struggles and progress of women’s rights globally, this year is a call to action to demand gender equality within the next 20 years. Women, particularly in Australia have come a long way – earning the right to vote, own land, remain employed after marriage; however we are still a long way off being truly equal. And women in our region are not nearly as lucky. Incidences of violence against women in the highlands of Papua New Guinea are almost 100 per cent. Women in Pacific governments are under-represented in their Parliaments with only around five percent holding elected positions compared to the global average of 21 per cent.

Join the conversation on 5 March at the National Convention Centre. Women’s rights are human rights. Whether it is pay equality, reducing the burden of poverty on women, parental leave, eliminating family violence, increasing the number of women in government and on boards, or addressing the impact of armed conflict on women and their involvement in the peace process, there are a multitude of issues to take action to further gender equality. Together we can make a difference.

Help create a brighter future for women and girls. Join us on 5 March for lunch.

Speakers will include:

  • Air Marshall Geoff Brown AO, Chief of Air Force;
  • Irene M Santiago, Lead Convenor, WOMEN. SERIOUSLY! Global Campaign on Women, Peace and Security; and
  • Miriam Silva, Acting Chief Executive of TAFE SA

ABC News Journalist Virginia Haussegger will MC this event.
