International Women’s Day with UNAA Young Professionals

The United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) Young Professionals Committee will tomorrow host a panel discussion to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) 2015. This year the IWD is commemorating the Beijing + 20 Campaign, 20 years since the 1995 World Conference on Women which was instrumental in placing women’s rights at the centre of the global agenda.

As the official theme for IWD 2015 is ‘Make It Happen’, the UNAA Young Professionals panel discussion will align broadly with that message. Each of the speakers have, in different ways, been public advocates for the platform of gender equality and the promotion of women’s empowerment. These speakers are:

  • Julie McKay, ED of UN Women National Committee of Australia
  • Karen Fryar AM, Magistrate of the Children’s Court ACT
  • Lieutenant General David Morrison AO, Chief of the Army

The purpose of the panel discussion is to hear from the perspectives of the above speakers and varying contexts in which they work at local, domestic and international levels to share their experiences of women in leadership and ‘taking stock’ of where we, as a society and country, are placed in 2015. The panel will also discuss hopes for the next generation of leaders and what society should be doing to get there.

The panel discussion for IWD will be the flagship event for the UNAA Young Professionals network in the ACT for 2015.

International Women’s Day will take place on Sunday 8 March.
