Turning fermenting fruit into a delicious alcoholic beverage is nothing short of amazing in my…
If I could only eat out for one meal, for the rest of my life, it would be breakfast. I love a lazy Saturday morning sitting in a café, drinking coffee and winding down from the past week. Plus, I am hopeless at poaching my own eggs so I am pretty much reliant on paying someone to do it for me. Every weekend I try and head somewhere different in Canberra to try out a new café and today I am sharing some of my favourite places so far.
The flavours that Mocan and Green Grout manage to pack into their breakfast are quite extraordinary. My favourite dish, the baked eggs, are rich and creamy with strong, sweet tomato flavours offset by the saltiness of the hummus and tanginess of the fresh lemon. Find them on Marcus Clarke Street in the NewActon precinct.
The scrambled tofu at Sweet Bones is just as good, if not better then any scrambled eggs I have ever had. Each time I eat there for breakfast I struggle to decide between the big brekkie or the pancakes – take a friend and share them both! Head to Lonsdale Street for this one.
The Cupping Room is my go to for breakfast, when we have visitors I know I can go there and they will get an amazing meal that uses fresh and flavoursome ingredients. I also love that the menu changes with the season so we are constantly getting new options to try. My current favourite is the Spanish mess – you can’t go wrong with chorizo and potato.
1/13 University Ave, Canberra City. Open 7am to 4pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday.
The eightysix menu not only includes breakfast type food (with a twist) such as soft boiled eggs with vegemite soldiers and black pudding and egg english muffin but also includes a lot of their popular lunch/dinner options like their delicious duck bun and roasted chicken. The perfect menu for when you are having breakfast at midday on a lazy weekend.
Chatterbox is one of my local cafes and one that we know we can rely on for consistent service and quality food. I really love that they offer a half serve so if you have lunch plans you can still fit in breakfast as well. I highly recommend the rosti stack – very indulgent, especially when you get it with bacon. Venture west to Belco and discover Chatterbox on Cameron Avenue.
For something completely different head to Kusina in Weston Creek for a traditional Filipino breakfast. Take a group of people so you can share a variety of dishes. My favourite dish is the Pork Tocino (sweet cured pork), which is sweet and sticky but tender on the inside.
Stand by Me has quickly become one of my favourite cafes in Canberra. The cafe is tucked away in the Lyons shops and has a relaxed and cosy vibe. The French toast flavour changes all the time, we had the lamington version for Australia Day and that was delicious. My partner also believes that they have the best scrambled eggs in Canberra and he would know as he orders the same thing everywhere we go so is somewhat of an expert.
If you struggle to decide between sweet and savoury when you go out for breakfast head to Trevs’ for the Taste Collective. The Taste Collective is a breakfast tasting plate that includes a corn fritter with bacon and avocado, pancakes (the flavour changes constantly), fruit salad and the juice of the day, all for $18, which in the Canberra breakfast world is a bargain.
Pulp Kitchen serves European bistro style fare with rich and indulgent ingredients like cheese, chorizo and thick tomato sauces. Once again you choose between a small serving and a regular serving and I definitely recommend it if you want something different for breakfast.
I rarely buy breakfast on a weekday preferring a leisurely brunch on the weekend but sometimes I forget my breakfast or we have no food in the house and it can’t be avoided. I love Superfine Cafe because they serve healthy food that you can grab on the run – something that can be difficult in the city in a morning.
The chia pudding is really filling and can keep me going until lunch – it is made up of a layer of chia, yoghurt, muesli and banana and best of all is served with a small pot of maple syrup which gives it a subtle sweetness. Find Superfine tucked behind the bus interchange on Mort Street.
