It is well and truly spring – time to come out of hibernation and start exploring our amazing corner of the world – and we have the perfect suggestion.
The Tradies Murrumbateman Moving Feast is back for 2016, and it’s better than ever. Now in its tenth year, it is the perfect excuse to get out of the house and explore Canberra’s beautiful wine region. Being held over the long weekend of 1-2 October, a total of fifteen wineries are opening their doors for you to visit, have a bite and try some beautiful local wines.
For $20, you will get a delicious savoury signature tasting dish, which comes paired with a glass of matching wine – you even get to keep the glass! For the sweet tooths out there, there is the dessert option for $15 which also comes with a matching wine. The most difficult decision will be deciding which of the fifteen participants to sample.
For Wendy O’Dea at Dionysus Winery, the Moving Feast is an annual highlight that she has been involved since day one. Wendy says many locals don’t actually realise just how great the area is for wine, even though its right on their doorstep.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to get people out and about and show off what we’ve got out here at Murrumbateman,” says Wendy.
At Dionysus it’s a long process to choose the dish and wine for the feast, with discussions on next year’s selection already happening.
“It’s a case of trying to change it up because we don’t like to have the same thing every year”.
This year the winery is opting for a Duck San Choy Bao paired with a Pinot Noir, both new selections they haven’t shared at the feast before.
The Moving Feast is also a fantastic opportunity to show off the winery to new people “I love sharing my passion for wine in a fun way,” says Wendy.
Knowing sometimes wine tastings can seem intimidating for novice tasters, Wendy urges that the Moving Feast is the perfect opportunity to try out and learn about wine tasting, as Wendy see’s the whole weekend as an opportunity for “meeting new people, having a laugh and helping them appreciate wine.”
To really take advantage of the Moving Feast, her recommendation is to come for the whole weekend and try to visit as many places as possible, “each winery out here offers something special, we’re all good and there is a good experience to be had at each of the wineries.”
This year will Barton Estate’s fifth participating in the feast. They’ll be serving their interpretation of a dish from Bordeaux called “daube.”
Proprietor (and in this case, head chef) Julie Chitty describes it as “a braised beef with pork belly in it with herbs and spices,” a traditional recipe – the stock alone is several days in the making.
They are matching it with a Bordeaux style blend wine, based on a cabernet sauvignon and blended with four other varieties of wine, which will match the fare perfectly. Julie says they like to keep things “rustic and simple” whether it’s their food, or their cellar door set up.
There are giveaways happening over the weekend as well. Just make sure to pick up a “Murrumbateman Moving Feast Passport” at the start of the day and get it stamped at participating venues along your food and wine adventures to be in the running to win a delicious prize pack.
