First look: The Southern rises in Woden, and we say cheers to that!

A lot’s been going on in the former site of Belluci’s Woden.

A total makeover has taken place since the much-loved south-side haunt closed its doors in July after nearly a quarter of a century of bringing its special brand of Italian food to the city.

Now Frank Kochinos is putting his apron back on as the iconic Irving Street landmark cranks back into full swing.

The Southern Public Bar & Bistro promises to breathe new life into the area as a vibrant and inviting pub, set to become a new favourite spot for sports, a good feed, and a lot of local entertainment – perfect for families and friends alike.

Centred around a beautiful oak bar with a classic new fit-out designed and delivered by Capezio Copeland, The Southern will provide a seat for everyone – whether you’re catching the big game on the big screens, getting competitive at trivia, or just enjoying a pint with pals.

Frank and his team are “thrilled to launch The Southern and provide a genuine community pub experience in Woden. Whether you’re a sports fan or a family looking for a fun and affordable night out, we want everyone to feel at home here”.

It will also provide a country pub-inspired menu which promises to go easy on the wallet, with dishes such as half a kilo of buffalo wings with dressing coming in at under $20 and pulled pork tacos for $14. There are also some healthy options including salads, and a salmon poke bowl to order alongside the pizza and schnitzel! There will be local favourite tipples from Capital Brewing and Bent Spoke, plus classics like Carlton Draft. If your tastes are a little more sophisticated, check out the cocktail list.

While the pub encourages community, it will also offer versatile event spaces for private celebrations.
