Where to find New York-style food in Canberra
Posted on
I couldn’t help but wonder…where could I go for some classic New York-style food without having to book a plane ticket?
If you’ve seen a bagel smothered in cream cheese, a greasy slice of pizza, or a classy deli sandwich on your Instagram or TikTok and – just like me – you just couldn’t help but wonder, ‘When will that be in my hands?’ it may be time to take a bite of the Big Apple from the comfort of our cosy capital.
And just like that, HerCanberra curated the perfect list to feed your New York state of mind.
Bagels
Yes, a New York-style bagel is different from what you’d find in Australia, and we’re not just saying that.
Always boiled in water that has had barley malt added (giving it its signature taste, texture, and leathery skin) and often topped with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or the famous “everything bagel” seasoning, it’s unparalleled.
And whilst it may not be exactly the same, with the right amount of cream cheese smear, these spots have what it takes to bring a little NYC to your belly.

Meat eaters know that New York Strip Steak has a deep history in the state, with the story beginning in the early 19th century with Delmonico’s, an influential restaurant in New York City.
