You’d think our #newnormal would mean more hours to luxuriate in the ritual of preparing…
Global Sisters help stoke the fires of success for three Canberra women.
Women helping women is something Achol, Athok and Traza have come to understand as integral to shattering the glass ceiling, as they chase their food dreams through catering business White Nile Women.
Named for the tributary that feeds the great river that in turn acts as the lifeblood for many African nations, White Nile Women aims to bring delicious South Sudanese fare to Canberra. However, as refugees, taking a dream from food fantasy to reality required a little female empowerment.
Enter Global Sisters, the powerhouse helping women like Achol, Athok and Traza become entrepreneurs and business owners worldwide. The female-led organisation provides women who are financially excluded or face barriers due to their circumstances with the know-how and support to become financially independent, creating a ripple effect of positive change in their families and communities.
The Global Sisters approach is four-prong; equipping women with practical and experiential business knowledge, access to safe business loans, an understanding of personal brand and online presence, and technological capability and accessibility.
Women – or Sisters – are given access to community partners, such as non-profit and community organisations, councils, and employment agencies, to aid in their journey. The team works with women for up to three years, helping them incubate and execute ideas, study, or accelerate ready-to-be-realised dreams, such as White Nile Women.
Achol, Athok and Traza will be showcasing the business’ gravitas with a kitchen takeover as part of DAANA restaurant’s Karma Kitchen initiative next week. The event is dedicated to supporting a charity in the community, with a pay-as-you-wish approach to menu pricing.
Half of the proceeds earned on the night will go straight towards helping White Nile Women continue to further their dream.
Just as the White Nile River brings life to Africa, White Nile Women want to bring life to Canberra’s food scene with their South Sudanese treats, so keep an eye out for them at future markets and events.
