Pick up your cameras and find the winning Candid Canberra shot!

Posted on

In today’s digital age where selfies dominate, it’s easy to forget the art and beauty of capturing a candid photo.

That’s why the Perinatal Wellbeing Centre is encouraging kids to pick up a camera (or smartphone) after school, on the weekend or during the upcoming school holidays and take a candid snap for the #CandidCanberra photography competition.

Once submitted, each kiddo’s entry will be on display during a photo exhibition held at the Shine Dome on the grounds of the Australian National University on 11 May.  The best part? Each child receives a printed copy of their photo to keep when the show is over to hang at home.

The small entry fee will be donated to help women with perinatal depression and anxiety, with three cash prizes up for grabs– 1st place: $500, 2nd place: $250 and 3rd place: $100.

Individuals can enter as many times as they like, across categories including:

  • Family
  • Anything Goes and
  • Kids Kategory (under 18s)
  • Pregnancy
  • And who wouldn’t love to see a Battle of the Pollies

Taking a shot at the competition provides kids with the opportunity to showcase their talents and gain recognition for their artistry. What better day out than to bring the family along to see their artwork displayed in a public setting?

Perinatal Wellbeing Centre CEO, Dr Yvonne Luxford, says taking photos is a great way for children to express themselves and candid shots often bring families such joy – what better way to show children that they can be involved in the contribution to a great cause.

Entering #CandidCanberra can also be a great way for kids to challenge themselves and step out of their comfort zones. It’s an opportunity to push the boundaries of their creativity and experiment with different techniques and styles.

Whether they choose to enter a shot in black and white, use natural lighting, or focus on capturing emotions and expressions, the possibilities are endless- maybe they don’t even try at all and end up with the winning shot!

The competition serves as a platform for kids to explore their interests, develop their skills, and discover their unique artistic voice.

“Candid Canberra is an opportunity for children to see their special photos hung in a professional exhibition, and to help parents who need a hand at the same time! We loved and appreciated how the community got behind Cake Off in previous years and I know everyone will enjoy being part of Candid Canberra. I’m sure there are lots of little ones that would like to proudly show off!”

If you’re looking for something to do with the kids, why not head out and about while they snap away?

Entries are now open and tickets for the exhibition will be available at perinatalwellbeingcentre.org.au/Event/candid-canberra.

Digital photos must be submitted by Tuesday, 30 April and will be professionally printed, which you will get to keep after the event.

Public exhibition viewing: 10 am – 4 pm Saturday 11 May at The Shine Dome in Acton.
