A Christmas miracle is here! The Undercurrent Design Market is back!

One of the best feelings in the world has to be knowing that you have just bought the perfect gift—and with the return of the Undercurrent Design Market, you’ll have all you need to succeed at secret Santa this year.
Over 50 bespoke and hand-selected market stalls are coming to the National Portrait Gallery next month, as Undercurrent celebrates its 11th market, after a two-year pause.
Surrounded by the works of art in the gallery, we wouldn’t be surprised if you thought the items for sale could be in a museum thanks to the organiser Richard Baz from The Curatoreum.
“Where we really try to make a point of difference with Undercurrent compared against other markets is that this is a really curated selection of stalls and we make sure there is a diversity amongst the artists,” Richard says.
These artists range from ceramicist, Lea Durie, owner of Mud Dept. to jeweller Emma Kidson, and over 50 other Australian creators.
As you wander the markets and chat away with each of the creators, you will be able to learn details both large and small, that turn the item you already like into something that you love.
“You get to meet the makers and know that you’re buying directly from an Australian artist which is a really nice thing,” Richard says.
Open over three days, why not kick-start your weekend the right way by heading along after work?
Friday’s late-night shopping will take the markets to a whole other level with a bar and live music to entertain you as you wander the stalls picking up your very own unique gifts. One gift for someone, one gift for you is a good strategy, right?
And we all know that nothing is worse than not being able to move about freely and after the last two years we have had, we wouldn’t blame you if you’d rather not fight your way through a crowd.
That’s why Richard has designed a layout that’s the perfect antidote for the Christmas shopping hustle and bustle.
“We’ve deliberately made it a bit more spacious and made sure that people will have room to move around. We want to make it as enjoyable and easy for our visitors as possible,” he says.
Perfectly placed four weeks out from Christmas, you’ll have your presents ready for under the tree before you even have it set up.
