Beauty Roadtest : Laser Clinics Australia

Posted on

Our ‘Roadtest’ series is all about demystifying treatments and procedures that you might have been reluctant to try yourself. Perhaps there’s the ‘fear factor’, or you’re not keen to shell over your hard-earned money without really knowing what you’re in for.

That’s where the HerCanberra Team comes in. We put our faces, bodies and even our bottoms on the line to tell you exactly what you can expect to experience. Just quietly? I love this series. It’s great to try new things outside my ‘comfort zone’ and seeing the results.

Today? It’s a double-barrel body and face roadtest from Laser Clinics Australia (LCA) at Westfield Belconnen and Westfield Woden: Laser Hair Removal and Microdermabrasion.

Most people have heard of Laser hair removal, but do you know what actually happens during a treatment? Here’s a quick rundown. The laser works by directing concentrated light into the hair follicle, inhibiting the hair’s ability to grow without disrupting or damaging the skin’s surface. Designed with sensitive skin in mind, these lasers are safe enough to be used on any part of the body, and target different skin types whilst ensuring maximum results.

I’d never tried Laser hair removal – a form of permanent hair reduction – despite being told that my combination of fair skin and dark hair is the perfect candidate (you don’t, however, need to meet this profile to get laser – LCA’s therapists will take your skin and hair type into account in a complimentary 15-minute consultation before creating a personalised treatment plan.)

So why had’t I ever tried it? Well, in my mind I thought it would be (a) take a really long time (b) be really expensive, and (c) be really painful. Turns out I was wrong on all counts.

When I received my introductory email from LCA Westfield Belconnen’s owner, Borka Buseska, she gave me a few preparation instructions: to ensure I hadn’t waxed the area for at least two weeks beforehand, to allow the roots to have grown back; no fake tan; and to shave the area the night before. She said the treatment would take approximately 30 minutes including the consultation process.

Now, here’s where I admit to having a bit of a shocker. Armed with my previous misconceptions about time, I read the details of my treatment as being ‘underarm or either half or full leg’. There actually should have been an ‘AND’ in there. So I rocked up with nice tidy armpits ready for the laser, but stubbly legs (c’mon, it’s cold out there!).

The lasers use a wide beam which allows the removal of multiple hair follicles at the same time, hence my laser treatment took all of about 30 seconds. I’m serious. In fact, the LCA ladies reckon they can do underarms, Brazilian and legs in 17 minutes total.

So, we’ve established that it’s fast. You will need 6-10 treatments to achieve 70-90% permanent hair reduction, but at $99 for a 1/2 Leg + Brazilian + FREE Underarms, that’s pretty competitive pricewise compared to other impermanent methods.

With the first skin and laser appointment at LCA being 50% off the regular price, that’s a further saving.

What’s it feel like? The closest sensation I can compare it to is being flicked repeatedly by a rubber band. I didn’t find it painful (based on my brief treatment) and it’s certainly not as painful as waxing.

It’s obviously not an instant fix – LCA recommend 6-10 treatments to achieve permanent hair reduction, but this will vary depending on the individual – so I can’t give you a rundown of results…but I’ll keep you posted as to how I go over the next few sessions. But in terms of addressing my prior concerns of pain, time and money, consider that done.

Then it was over to Westfield Woden for the second part of the roadtest – Microdermabrasion. But before we get into the procedure, a side note on the clinics’ shopping centre locations. It used to be that laser treatments, skin treatments like peels and microdermabrasion, and cosmetic injections were only done in ‘high end’ boutiques and restricted to those with a high level of disposable income – LCA means that these treatments are accessible to a far wider range of people, both in terms of money and location.

Anyhooo. Onto the treatment.

I actually went to LCA Woden to have a Fractional RF Treatment, but after owner, Cassandra Smith, had a bit of a squiz at my skin and discussed my concerns (pigmentation, mostly), she suggested we start with a microdermabrasion treatment and then follow it up a couple of weeks later with Laser Pigmentation Removal (that part is still to come).

So, what exactly is this Microdermabrasion thing I speak of? Well, it’s a treatment used to improve the texture and quality of your skin, and it’s fantastic at tackling dull, dry or rough skin, treating acne and reducing superficial pigmentation and fine lines.

It’s kinda like a teeny tiny vacuum cleaner/sandpaper combo for your skin. A small microdermabrasion hand piece is passed over the face to loosen and remove the upper layer of dead skin cells. You know that sensation you feel when you place a vacuum cleaner nozzle on your skin, and it sucks it up? That’s exactly what microdermabrasion feels like, only more concentrated.

The treatment took about 15 minutes and, afterwards, my skin felt AMAZING. So smooth and soft. And my nose was pretty much blackhead-less. If that’s a word. You can walk out the clinic door straight away and look completely normal – well, better than normal…a little ‘glowy’, and the effects will last about a month.

I remember a time when these kinds of treatments were regarded as expensive and ‘serious’ investments. These days, they’re so accessible – I mean, you can get a microdermabrasion for less than the cost of a bottle of Clinique moisturiser.

So, before you revert to your same old beauty regime, try something outside your ‘comfort zone’. I reckon you’ll be glad you did.
