Roadtest: HydraFacial

Posted on

With two young children and very little time to myself, it’s safe to say my skin has been in desperate need of a pick-me-up for some time.

But with limited hours in the day, trying to fit in multiple treatments seems, well, all too hard.

Enter the HydraFacial.

A cult favourite among beauty experts (rumour has it it’s performed every 15 seconds around the world) the HydraFacial is a unique three-step hydra-dermabrasion treatment to improve the health and hydration of your skin by cleansing, extracting and infusing it with intensive antioxidants.

Best of all it takes just 30 minutes, isn’t painful and there is zero downtime. Results show everything from spikes in hydration and radiance, to improved firmness and texture, and reductions in oil and pore size. In an age where we’re all so busy, it might just be the perfect facial.

Offering the treatment in Canberra is Clear Skincare Manuka, which has over 60 clinics around the nation. As I stepped into the newly opened clinic after racing from childcare, I instantly felt my blood pressure drop with its calming blue and white décor. After completing a client form, I was led into the treatment room where my therapist Jessica gently led me through the process.

The first step is a cleanse and peel to gently resurface skin with a mixture of glycolic and salicylic acids using the HydraFacial’s vortex pen. It’s a gentle sucking sensation that is much more comfortable than a typical microdermabrasion treatment.

The second step is to extract and hydrate, which is done with a suction device to remove built-up dirt from pores, with no painful squeezing required (Jessica admits this is the most satisfying part of the procedure). Despite it sounding uncomfortable I found I was still relaxed during this part of the treatment, even though there was probably a LOT of dirt built up.

The final step is to fuse and protect, saturating the skin’s surface with antioxidants and peptides to maximise glow. This part left my skin tingly, as the antioxidants did their thing.

After 30 minutes I walked out with clear, fresh skin that felt firmer with only a small amount of redness. Half an hour later, any redness disappeared, and the glowing part began. I found my makeup glided on easily; and I made a mental note that this is the perfect pre-party treatment.

Even though I had a teething child the night before, my skin looked fresh and radiant without makeup throughout the day, perhaps for the first time this year.

That’s the beauty of the HydraFacial, according to Jessica—there’s no “minimum of four treatments” to see results.

“Clients can book a one-off treatment ahead of their wedding or an event, or a series of treatments every couple of months to keep skin looking fresh and glowy,” she says.

If there’s a treatment to erase all signs of the stress of 2020, this may just be it. I know I’ll be back again before the year ends.
