Three cool events you’ll be surprised to find at our national cultural institutions
Posted on
Only visit our national cultural institutions when there’s a new exhibition on offer? You might be surprised to find there’s a whole lot to experience.
From a street festival that promises to transport you to the Middle East to an adults-only celebration on May The Fourth, here are five events you’ll want to put in your diary.
Adults-Only Sci(Fi)Night at Questacon on May The Fourth
Leave the Ewoks at home and journey to a gallery far far away (i.e. Questacon) for an Adults-Only Sci(Fi)Night on May the Fourth.
Fight against (or for) the dark side at VR Beat Saber stations or battle your friends in JoustMania: a contest of speed, skills, and courage. Pop along to Q Lab and discover what happens to the human body in space, or suit up for a night of fandom-fuelled competition in The Shed, launching paper rockets under the stars. Perhaps you’d like to get an upgrade from Dr Scar as he uses special effects makeup to convert humanity to cyborgs, then see yourself in sci-fi in the greenscreen photobooth.
May The Fourth be with you.
6 pm, Saturday 4 May | Questacon, King Edward Terrace, Parkes | More info and tickets here.
A queer Koori wonderland at the National Portrait Gallery
Go find your costume box and get ready to shake your tail feathers at Brolga, this year’s iteration of the National Portrait Gallery’s 18+ late-night event!
First staged at Melbourne Fringe, Brolga is a collective takeover of the Gallery curated by Wiradjuri man and multidisciplinary artist Joel Bray, featuring First Nations and Queer DJs and performing artists. The Gallery will transform into an explorative wonderland of dance, art, film and performance, inspired by First Nations stories of the dancing brolga.
As the night progresses, interactive spaces and corners will be activated. Delve into the depths of Bray’s much-loved Considerable Sexual License performance, channel your creativity at our brolga-inspired craft station, and dance the night away in the glow of a disco ball.
If that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, gather and feast on a mouthwatering line-up of food stall offerings, or grab a drink at one of the bars.
6.30 pm, Friday 3 May | National Portrait Gallery, Parkes Place, Parkes | More info and tickets here.
Settle in for a cult movies at the iconic ARC Cinema
Love a good movie? How could you forget about cult movie nights at the National Sound and Film Archive?!
With a diverse line-up on offer (ranging from E.T. The Extra Terrestrial to The Craft) spending a few hours in the dark in the beautiful Art Deco cinema with some snacks is a cracking Canberra experience.
