A New Treasured Home for Trove

Astrid O'Neill

“We’ve all benefited in different ways from Trove, particularly with the confidence we get from testing our items in the marketplace.”

May 2016 marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the Trove Canberra Cooperative.

Trove was formed in 2014 to showcase talented local creatives and their handmade goods. It’s grown into a thriving community of almost 20 makers who moved from Gold Creek to open their new Civic shopfront on 9 May.

Trove creative Janet Kininmonth, of In My Element Glass Design, says that because of the cooperative’s rapid growth, a new space had to be found.

“Our new space is twice the size!” exclaims Janet. “We found we were rapidly outgrowing our previous space and wanted to be somewhere central with room for us to grow, hold workshops and show our talented members’ items to the best advantage. There’s always lots happening around Civic, it has a wonderful buzz to it and we’re looking forward to being part of that.”

Local designers, huge success

When asked about local designers whose business has benefitted from their relationship with Trove, Janet explains it’s all about community.

“Getting your brand out there can be tough. Membership with Trove not only provides space in our shopfront but also the shared knowledge of other members, which can range from advice on display, product styling, new item ideas and social media assistance,” she says.

“We’ve all benefited in different ways, particularly with the confidence we get from testing our items in the marketplace. Customer and member feedback really helps our members define and refine their range.”

Wood and Wax Studios Timber Caddy

Wood and Wax Studios is our husband-and-wife team who originally joined Trove to represent two separate businesses: Creations by Holmes and Ambience Canberra,” explains Janet.

“Their time with Trove and ability to interact with customers on a regular basis helped them to hone their products. With the support of their fellow designers, they rebranded their business with great success and now take custom orders.”

Janet says that in a space like Trove, collaboration happens naturally.

“One thing we’ve enjoyed seeing is our members collaborating. JAC Studios uses stainless steel and resin and worked with the artist Fiona Hill to create a jewellery collection,” explains Janet. “The results were amazing!”

A treasure trove of stories

Janet says that that many stories are created when people come looking for something specific at Trove.

“We have so many stories!” says Janet. “From people choosing special gifts to send to loved ones overseas to custom orders to take them with them on their travels, new mums looking for unique items for their precious bubs, tourists thrilled to find something locally made, or our regular customers who know they can pop in and find something unique, well priced and beautiful.”

“We love finding out where our customers are from and where their purchases are going. Trove items have made their way around the world including to Sri Lanka, Turkey, Japan, Sweden, USA and Canada. Recently one of our members, JAC Studios, had a request for 10 custom necklaces purchased as travel gifts for a group of holiday makers to bind them together on a special trip overseas – such a lovely idea.”

“Another favourite story that comes to mind is of a lovely customer who kept visiting us to buy Wood and Wax Studios’ Winter Nights candles. They then became a member of Trove Canberra as ATP Creative Designs, making products that help to organise busy lives beautifully.”
