Canberra wines’ new home

Elouise Calabria

With over 15 wines available by the glass and starting at $6, this is one of the best bargains in town.

I bet if I told you I was sipping fine wine, nibbling on some of the region’s best local produce in an elegant wine bar, you would probably think I was at one of Canberra’s fancier hotels or restaurants. Wine has the posh tag, there’s no doubt about it, but the new Canberra Wine House at The Dickson Tradies is refreshingly different – great wine without the faff.

The Canberra Wine House is a true celebration of our region’s internationally-renowned drops (this is not just PR spin – Lerida Estate and Shaw Vineyard Estate both recently picked up medals at the International Wine Challenge in London, competing with over 9000 wines from across the world.) The Dickson Tradies have been strong supporters of the local wine industry for a number of years and in fact only serve Canberra wines, the only place in town to do so.

The Tradies has focussed on giving Canberra wines the home they deserve and The Canberra Wine House is elegant, warm, intimate and friendly. With over 15 wines available by the glass and starting at $6, this is one of the best bargains in town. The staff are very knowledgeable and happy to make suggestions based on the type of wine you generally enjoy – you may even discover Canberra does it better (a local Sauvignon Blanc wins every time over a Kiwi one, in my humble opinion!)

The Tradies Group CEO Rob Docker is very passionate about the local wine industry

“Some of the most amazing award winning wines are right at our back door,” he said. “We are so dependent on the local economy it’s imperative we all support and promote local business when and where we can.

“Over three years ago we saw a gap in the market and felt the need to promote Canberra wines, so we made our wine list 100% local and have had a very positive response. The Canberra Wine House was the next step for us, we want to continue to support the local wine industry and get the wines into as many mouths as possible. “

As well as offering wine by the glass, and many more by the bottle, The Canberra Wine House also stocks a great selection of takeaway wines. Next time you’re in Dickson for a meal, consider popping into The Tradies to purchase you’re BYO – you can actually try before you buy.

It can be a long drive home from Murrumbateman or Lake George so knowing that the likes of Clonakilla, Helm and Eden Road are a little closer to home, makes The Canberra Wine House a very tempting stop. There’s also an opportunity to try local wines that don’t usually operate a cellar door such as Jirra at Jeir Station and Ravensworth – both of whom make some really fabulous drops.

Tanya Olinder from Shaw Vineyard Estate is excited about the new space and with the opportunity to showcase Shaw’s fabulous wines to a new audience of wine lovers.

“When The Tradies decided to stock 100% Canberra Wines a few years back, we were thrilled that someone was taking ‘support the locals’ so seriously,” she said.

“Now with the recently opened Canberra Wine House they have taken it to another level by providing a more sophisticated yet welcoming space where people can get together for a drink and learn about Canberra wines, and then take a bottle home with them.  We are enormously grateful for the support they have continually shown the Canberra Wine Region and hopefully others will take their lead and do the same.”

The Canberra Wine House is taking its job of promoting local wines seriously and there are plans to hold regular events including wine education nights; new releases/launches; wine and food fairs; wine dinners and plenty more. Wine is a glorious thing to drink and the new Canberra Wine House provides the perfect setting to do so – the first tasting night will be held on 1 July, hope to see you there!
