Get the scoop on The Muesli Bar

I remember stumbling across The Muesli Bar early one morning at the Capital Region Famers Market.

I could not walk past the gorgeous stall that displayed big beautiful jars full of oats, coconut, nuts, dried fruit and more. For anyone that loves a good muesli, porridge or trail mix, this stall is like the muesli equivalent of a chocolate factory!

Having got to know founders, Lisa and Rowly Fischer through their participation in The Forage, I have watched them go from their market stall to supplying large retail outlets like Ziggy’s to now opening their own shop space in Fyshwick.

“It kind of started out as a hobby,” explains Lisa. “We have a passion for healthy eating and our homemade muesli was pretty tasty! We also recognised a gap in the market here in Canberra so three years ago, we started out at the Capital Region Farmers Market.”

As the name suggests, The Muesli Bar isn’t about buying pre-made muesli in bags. It’s a bar where you literally get to choose what goes in your muesli, porridge or trail mix. It’s all completely custom made. Although if you are indecisive, Lisa and Rowly have a range of their own pre-mixes to make the decision easier. There are no added preservatives, sugar or oil, and if you have dietary requirements don’t worry. Gluten-free, vegan, paleo, FODMAP and diabetic options are available.

If you were to ask Lisa and Rowly for advice on what to put in a blend, Lisa would definitely say a fruit free or oat granola. Rowly on the other hand, would recommend anything toasted and sweet!

After three years attending the markets and supplying other retail outlets, Lisa and Rowly made a decision to ‘go bigger’ and opened their shop front a few weeks ago.

“It was go bigger or close down, so we went bigger! We needed our own space, storage and a giant oven. All of which we now have and love. When you come to The Muesli Bar in Fyshwick, you can mix your own blend of muesli, porridge or trail mix or choose from our pre-mixed range. We also stock some extra ingredients that we don’t take to the markets like goji berries and orange peel.

“Opening the shop has been a bit daunting,” says Lisa. “Rowly did most of the fit out but it’s exciting taking a risk like this and it’s allowing us to expand and offer so much more.”

So if like me, you love a good porridge first thing in the morning, love supporting small, local business but sometimes can’t get to Capital Region Farmers Market every week, you’ll be as equally happy to know you can now get your supplies during the week as well.
