Oh Happy Day!

In the age of Instagram and Pinterest, throwing a party is no longer just a matter of picking a venue, selecting a beverage package and blowing up a few balloons. These days, people are embracing the concept of DIY event styling and beautiful event presentation, for everything from weddings to birthday parties, baby showers or family reunions. But just where do you find the people to help you throw the perfect shindig? For most people, the answer seems to be mix of Google and crossed fingers…at least until now.

From the seasoned event experts behind the award winning Handmade Canberra and Hustle&Scout comes Oh Happy Day, an event which promises to be a one-stop-shop for anyone interested in planning a stylish, sophisticated and on-trend gathering.

“We wanted to combine our creative talents to put on a great event and saw a big gap in the market,” says event co-organiser Tegan McAuley.

“Many of our friends from all walks of life are having or attending different celebrations like 21st birthdays, wedding anniversaries, weddings, and baby showers. We’ve also been to the most amazing gay celebrations, cultural festivals, 70th birthdays and divorce parties and we knew there was a need for something inclusive.”

Tegan says that while they love traditional white weddings, they wanted to add originality, style and something different; hence the name. Oh Happy Day is about everyone’s happy day.

Oh Happy Day is the coming together of event planners, wedding specialists, caterers, florists, photographers and fashionistas to show Canberra how to get its party on in style,” says Tegan. “The event will showcase everything you need to plan and host the perfect celebration.”

So, while brides will find more inspiration than they can poke a sugared almond at, Tegan is adamant that this isn’t just a wedding fair.

“Not at all. While Oh Happy Day will definitely cater for weddings, this is a one-stop shop for anyone who wants to plan the most stylish, on-trend and memorable celebration their guests have ever experienced, from baby showers to anniversaries, birthday parties to intimate dinners.”

It promises to be very different from the traditional expo format, where you wander around a large hall visiting lots of different stalls and picking up a whole load of pamphlets that you inevitably throw away. This free event will be more intimate and aims to immerse visitors in a beautiful, celebratory environment.

Oh Happy Day will see an exclusive selection of businesses gather at the National Portrait Gallery for an afternoon to sell and showcase their products and services, chat to visitors, and offer advice and inspiration. There will be live music, food and drink and a media wall to capture guests’ first experience of the event.”

And it’s not just for women (because blokes like to party too, apparently). There will be a dedicated  space where guys can relax, have a drink, plan their bucks night, buy the right gifts and be inspired by fashion and grooming ideas for their big event.

Then there’s the bit that we’re excited about here at HerCanberra HQ – the Evening VIP Gala Dinner, presented by us! At 6pm, the red carpet will roll out and champagne will start flowing, as the space is transformed into a beautiful VIP long-table dinner venue catered by the National Portrait Gallery caterers, Trippas White Group.

“Guests will have exclusive access to the vendors for the hours before and after dinner, sample the best of Canberra’s local food and wine at dinner, and indulge in a yummy dessert buffet,” says Tegan.

“During dinner, there will be a roaming fashion show featuring HAUS Models wearing a selection of bridal and partywear, and set to live music by DJ Ashley Feraude.”

It sure beats doing the rounds of the boutiques on the weekend, or spending days on Pinterest trying to find the perfect event ‘element’. We’ll be there with bells on!
