A Frugal Find: Honey Style Chicken
Posted on
Feeding a family on a budget can be challenging – but, as I proved in my last Frugal Find post, it IS possible to whip up tasty, nutritious meals without spending a fortune.
Today, it’s Honey Style Chicken, adapted from a recipe I found at www.mmmcafe.blogspot.com.
These quantities will serve four people for just $8.27 (prices based on Coles Queanbeyan) or around $2.06 per person. Heathy, tasty and cheap!
what you need
1.5 Kg of chicken $5.98 (You can choose what kind of chicken you use – I use drumsticks because my children love them and they’re inexpensive)
½ cup honey $1.24
¼ cup of soy sauce $0.38
1 chopped onion $0.54
1/8 cup of tomato sauce $0.07
1 garlic clove, minced $0.06
Rice for four people $1.08
what to do
Slow Cooker
Place chicken into the slow cooker.
In a small bowl, combine honey, soy sauce , onion, tomato sauce and garlic. Pour mixture over the chicken.
Cook on low for 3 hours or high for 1 ½ hours. Serve with rice or noodles and if you’re feeling a little fancy schmancy, sprinkle with sesame seeds and some chopped shallots.
In the oven
Place chicken in a greased baking pan.
In a small bowl, combine honey, soy sauce , onion, tomato sauce and garlic. Pour mixture over the chicken and bake in moderate over (180) for 20 to 30 minutes.
Serve with rice or noodles or with the garnish as per the slow cooker version if you want to pretty it up!
Doesn’t get any easier than that!
