Girls get moving this Sunday with Tennis ACT

Posted on

The free, fun day out is all about having a go.

According to The Conversation, the average kid in primary school does more than 100 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. But as they grow up, levels of physical activity starts to rapidly decrease, especially for girls.

By the time they are 15 to 17-years-old, girls are active for less than 30 minutes each day, only half the recommended time for teenagers. That’s why Tennis ACT has partnered with the Australian Government’s Girls Make Your Move campaign for a free event on Sunday 24 March to encourage girls of all ages to get involved in physical activity.

We all know that it can be difficult to fit sport into the week, as well as juggling study, a social life, and maybe even part-time work. But, while the culture of women’s sport in Australia is changing thanks to inspirational athletes like Ellyse Perry and Canberra’s own UC Capitals WNBL team, many girls are still also socialised to believe that playing sport is a traditionally ‘masculine’ activity.

“Research has identified the fear of being judged as a key barrier for young women wishing to be physically active,” explains Lenka Greenhalgh, Tennis ACT Participation Manager. “Events like this are a great way for girls to try out new activities and to see that they can meet new people and have fun at the same time.”

Eight different sports will be on offer at the Canberra Tennis Centre on Sunday, along with yoga and Zumba sessions from Next Gen Canberra. The first 100 girls through the gates will also get a free tennis racquet.

“Tennis truly is a sport for life,” says Lenka. “It doesn’t matter if you are five or 85, you can get out on court.  Tennis is a fun way to get fit and also a great way to meet new people and there are also competition pathways for those who want to challenge themselves further.”

Of course, the benefits of sport are not only physical. Getting your heart rate up is proven to improve mental health outcomes and can help teenagers cope with the stress of academics and other responsibilities.

“Physical activity can change your mood, give you more energy, and keep you healthy. There’s a sport or activity out there for everyone; you just have to find one that works for you that you will stick with. It’s not about being the best or being perfect, it’s about giving it a go, trying new things and making new friends.”

Boys and girls of all ages and their families are welcome to attend from 9am to 11am on Sunday. For more information about the Girls Make Your Move campaign and related events, head to the website.
