Mix 106’s Kristen broadcasts her baby bulletin

One of our favourite radio stars is bursting with news.

Yes, Mix 106.3 personality Kristen Davidson is with child!

She and new husband Iain are finally going public with the news of their pregnancy today at the 16-week mark. And phew, it has been a hard secret to keep! But quite frankly, we couldn’t be more excited for them.

Yet, like so many couples looking to start a family, they found it a rocky road to conception.

Kristen has laid it all out in our interview in the hope that it might spark hope in others who are making a similarly difficult journey…

When did you start thinking about/talking about babies with Iain—pre or post-wedding or soon into dating?

It was always a question of ‘when’ not ‘if’ for us…But it was more me than him that felt pressure to get moving with having children.

I’m 36 and had a trip to hospital a few years ago with ovary issues so I was cautious. Iain always seemed optimistic that our time would come [but] I felt the pressure. I heard the dreaded clock.

When did you put words into action (so to speak!)?

We removed the goalie (went off contraception!) at the end of 2018, thinking we’ll just let nature take its course.

It was around the time of our wedding (May 2019) that we thought, ‘right let’s focus on this’.

What happened when you didn’t fall pregnant straight away?

Each month that passed a little piece of you loses its sparkle. You become more anxious I guess.

I remember in early December having Brittany and Jarrod Croker on our radio show for them to announce their pregnancy and feeling so happy for them, but shedding a quiet tear in the car on the way home from work.

It was a tough day, my heart ached. And I felt so conflicted because you are genuinely so happy for two of your dear friends. But in that same moment you’re thinking, ‘will that be us’? And why not us? I felt so guilty for feeling like that.

Were you emotional?

I felt differently on different days. I’d go from feeling like this was my first test of being a mum, having patience! I’d go from that to feeling embarrassed.

I wondered if I was letting Iain down, I wondered if I was meant to be a mum, I wondered if I’d missed my window and prioritised work.

I wondered what was wrong with me? I wondered how the hell people fell pregnant after one-night stands?

What fertility pathway did you follow?

In November, I was referred to Compass Fertility which first put Iain and I through a range of tests then started tracking me through bloods.

Fertility tracking is all business, Emma—you go in for a blood test of a morning. By lunchtime, they have sent you a text with your ‘instructions’ for that day.

“Hi Kristen, please have intercourse on DATE and DATE, then come back for a blood test on DATE”. Wild.

Did you talk about it with people or keep it quiet?

Nige and my producer Tamara knew because I had to head off straight after the show some mornings to the fertility clinic. They were incredible and were vaults.

I was worried the office was starting to think I’d turned into a diva doing the show then leaving early. Nige reassured me that instead he was fueling rumours that I was having an affair, so I was “safe”. Ha!

Did it make it harder being in the public eye?

I’ve always been so transparent so it was difficult to be going through something and not talk about it on the show. It didn’t feel right. It was something just for Iain and I to navigate first.

But I’m keen to share it now because I think it’s important to remind each other that you just never know what someone else is going through.

What were some of your thoughts about having a family—did you ever let yourself consider that you might not get pregnant?

I never gave up hope.

Did you cry?

Absolutely, when that stick only showed one line I’d have a little moment in bathroom. Iain and I would hug and he’d say “well, next month must be our month” and we’d charge on.

What, if anything, gave you faith?

I had to change into this whole new gear, and just succumb to my body. She was in charge, not my brain.

I just kept telling myself that our little person would come to us when they are ready, not necessarily when I am ready!

How did you get pregnant?

Fertility tracking worked, we found out we were pregnant late December.

Tell me blow-by-blow how you found out and what your and Iain’s reactions were?

I did a pregnancy test at home by myself and was in total shock when it came up with two lines. I was numb. Because I was convinced I wasn’t pregnant.

I waited until Iain got home and being December he was home for a brief minute before getting ready to go to another work Xmas party while I hopped into bed to get up early. He told me to talk to him while he got ready because he was rushing out the door.

I remember him popping a pie in the microwave to heat up and munch on before he left and I thought “I’ll let him finish his pie, I’ll give him five more minutes of blissful ignorance before I change his world”.

I told him, remember this date, it’s the day our lives change. And then we just held each other. Then we swore! F**K, what do we do now??

How pregnant are you? Do you know the gender and how have you been feeling? What if any morning sickness have you had? Are you exhausted? Are you grateful beyond words? TELL ME EVERY FEELING YOU FEEL!

We are 16 weeks, and not finding out the gender. I think as adults there’s so little in life that’s a true surprise anymore! I am feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, nervous, excited but mostly HUNGRY. Mate, I’m eating for Australia.

It’s definitely getting real now that we’re telling people—which is a little scary in itself because there are always risks. But mostly I’m trying to let myself just enjoy the ride!

Note: Baby Davidson is due in August, and after a bit of a break Kristen will be back on the airwaves with Nige—the show format will continue into 2021.
