“They’re designed to burn, and to burn efficiently for long periods of time,” says Patrick.
“You need to burn a wood heater on high for an initial burn, for about half an hour or 45 minutes, and then you switch to medium or low, which is their most efficient setting. At that level, you can run them efficiently and effectively all day if you want to depending on the model, and they put out a gentle heat slowly which maintains the temperature of your room.”
They’re not only great for heating your home, but research suggests they’re also kinder to the environment. While carbon dioxide is produced when you light up your fire, replacement trees absorb that same amount of carbon dioxide, making them technically carbon neutral. And according to research by the CSIRO, a wood burning fireplace produces less greenhouse gas than all of the domestic heating options.
