ACT Classic Cruise is continuing its impressive fight against childhood cancer

Posted on

It’s perhaps one of life’s most inconceivable realities—a reality that two Australian families face every day when their child is diagnosed with cancer.

Determined to re-arm these brave families who are caught amidst the unimaginable is the Superheroes Act Classic Cruise—a community of car lovers who are using their vehicles as a means of inspiring change.

Their seven-year-old legacy sees an impressive fleet of classic cars making their way around Canberra while raising funds for Camp Quality, an Australian non-governmental and non-profit organisation that provides support for children and their families confronting a cancer diagnosis.

This Sunday 11 September their route will begin at the Arboretum before continuing along a scenic drive around Canberra, finishing at Questacon for drinks, nibbles, and unrestricted ‘car talk’. Each vehicle will have a $50 registration fee, which will then be donated directly to Camp Quality.

Sam Webster is a community member of the classic cruise who has witnessed the inspiring growth of this community-run convoy.

“Going back about five years ago when I started with the cruise, there were about 80 cars . So, you’ve got 80 people in a line snaking their way through a chosen route through Canberra. Well, when we did in February of this year we had 350 cars,” reflects Sam.

If you do manage to capture a glimpse of this impressive fleet cruising along in powerful harmony, you might see Sam driving the last HSV GTS Wolcott’s—which is in pretty good nick should he say so himself—but this event isn’t discriminator towards car age, as Sam explains.

“The Classic Cruise is aimed at anybody that’s got a car with some sort of classic feel about it, but it doesn’t have to be an old classic, and it doesn’t have to be a brand-new car either,” he says.

There’s still plenty of time to get involved and donate to Camp Quality. Sam’s personal page is open for donations, as well as the Classic Classic Cruise website, where you can find sponsors and donate individually. In line with the generous nature of this community, there will also be an online auction through ALLBIDS.

“The auction is going pretty well. Some of the auction prizes that are on there is a helicopter ride out to Shaw Wines from Canberra to have lunch and come back again—that’s $2,500, and already somebody has bid $800 for it.”

In addition to the helicopter ride, Canberrans can bid on a range of experiences, from a five-night stay at the Talgara Ski Chalet in Thredbo to private dining at Ginseng Chinese—a beautiful way to make memories and give the children and families at Camp Quality a chance to do the same.

And for those two families that—when reading this today—will have the trajectory of their lives permanently changed, the Classic Car Cruise is a flicker of hope in some of the darkest of circumstances. It’s rallying a community together in a sum of love and generosity that will make opening up the garage and dusting off the old machine completely worth it.

“It’s a bit of a fun day outing to raise money for a great charity, and it only takes a couple of hours to do,” says Sam.
