Sun? Is that you? While the past few months have made summer feel like a distant memory, these recent sun-kissed days have been an eagerly embraced warm reminder.

And what better way to celebrate than paying a visit to one (or more—we’re not judging) of Canberra’s much-loved and delicious ice cream spots?

From your classic cone, on-the-go cups, sprinkles, nuts or rich chocolate sauce, we have got a list of recommendations that will make your tastebuds melt.

Just make sure to check their holiday opening hours!

Via Dolce

Bringing to life authentic traditional gelato at Via Dolce, your tastebuds will be transported from the city centre straight to the heart of Italy. Not only are their scoops beautiful, but they are bursting with flavours such as Blood Orange, Mango and Biscotti—all of which is aromatic,  decadent and surprisingly light! After dinner, dessert anyone?

Gelatissimo

It’s the kind of place that will make you literally make you scream out loud. With their signature artisan aromas perfuming the air, the hardest part will be choosing favour. Good thing they are open seven days a week, so you have plenty of opportunities during the week to let your tastebuds indulge.

Rocking some truly unique and delicious flavours like the Geisha (vanilla frozen custard, cheesecake, pink rose petals, strawberries, watermelon and crushed pistachio) and Apple Pie (vanilla frozen custard, a cinnamon donut, real crushed apples plus cornflakes), Mookie concretes are made with vanilla and chocolate frozen custard that’s spun fresh every day.

More of a sip-it kinda person? Their frozen custard is also used in their shakes which include flavours such as Red Velvet, Peanut Butter and Miso and Matcha Green Tea.

Goodberry’s

Okay, this technically isn’t ice cream—but there’s a reason why Goodberry’s has maintained its drool-worthy reputation since the ’90s. A visual experience (as well as a culinary one), the wildly creative concoctions that live at the heart of this delicious destination have always kept fresh, creamy, all-natural ingredients at their helm. It’s safe to say Goodberry’s isn’t going anyway.

Known as a chocoholics’ paradise, Oliver Brown is the place to go if you’re hankering for waffles, crêpes, chocolate fondue and drinks—but it also serves up some mind-blowing sundaes.

We love the Fruitti Sundae—two flavours of fruit gelati topped with bananas, strawberries whipped cream, sweet flakes and a chocolate wafer stick—and with Oliver Brown stores open late most days of the week, it’s the perfect end to a summer day.

Moving around various locations in Canberra (check their Instagram or Facebook for updates), this moving soft-serve van is expanding the horizons for those who love ice cream but don’t love what dairy does to their bodies. That’s righttheir oat milk-based gelato is proving that it can be just as flavoursome and creamy (minus the stomach cramps). In the world of ice cream, truly anything is popsicle (get it?).

Making its way from Orange and firmly planting its sugary roots in the heart of Dickson’s Chinatown is the trailblazing ice creamery Split Milk. Using high-quality ingredients and serving up a menu with adventurous flavours, there’s a reason why hot summer days have a long line out the door.

Oh, and the best bit? You can have up to one litre of their rich and expansive flavours delivered right to your doorstep. Yes, we knowit’s equally tempting as it is dangerous.

Pure Gelato

A family-owned business that serves up award-winning gelato in the heart of Mitchell. Their ever-changing menu includes favourites such Choc Chip, English Toffee, Chai Latte, and Salted Cashew Nut—need we say more? Best enjoyed in the sun and scoffed down as quickly as possible for maximum summer effect.

Ben & Jerry’s

Ice cream and a moviename a better combination than that. This adored and criminally tasty company have made their way into Hoyts Cinema, and I don’t think anyone is complaining. Think Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Therapy (arguably the best kind of therapy), and Coconut Seven-Layered Bar (yes, seven)no one does ice cream quite like Ben & Jerry’s.

While you might usually limit yourself to two scoops, at Stripey Sunday, you might just be tempted to have fivewhich is what this heat and time of year absolutely conedones (sorry). It’s also a slow-paced inviting environment that you could honestly spend all day at. A little slice of heaven in the heart of Nicholls. Enjoy!

Tucked away in Dickson shops is the revered all-vegetarian café Rainbow Dreams, which continues to win over the most carnivorous of hearts. And while most of us are tempted to go there for the rainbow wraps and creative non-meat burgers – they also have a declivous selection of handmade gelato for a sweet and refreshing treat. Because life is all about balance, right?
