Chefs Eat Canberra – In The Inn

SpringOUT Pride Festival

Celebrating Australia’s most LGBTQIA+ friendly city and Canberra’s LGBTQIA+ community in all its fabulous diversity, it’s time to SpringOUT with ‘PRIDE in the Capital’ on their 25th anniversary!

Denman Village Playground Launch

2024 Craft + Design Canberra Festival

It’s the 10th year of the Craft + Design Canberra Festival, and there’s plenty to see and do. Connecting Canberra’s community with over 500 artists, craftspeople, designers and architects, the 2024 Festival advocates for design thinking, collaboration and making by hand to generate innovation and solve problems, providing hope for the future.

With a theme of Regenerate, the program of events includes exhibitions, talks, tours, activations, open studios and workshops responding to the festival theme and celebrating Canberra as a creative capital and a global city of design.

Birdsnest Canberra Pop-up

The birds are back in town! Cooma’s most famous fashion brand is making a temporary nest in Narrabundah for another Canberra pop-up.

Bringing a curated selection of brand spanking new spring/summer styles from their in-house labels, the pop-up store will be open to the public for walk-ins each day (no cost or tickets required). Research Festival 2024

Held by the University of Canberra, the Research Festival 2024 will be held across November at locations around Canberra and the University’s Bruce campus.

Focussing on sharing the impact of University of Canberra research on people and place, the festival will see the launch of the Life of a CBRn installation and hands-on education activities.

Come Alive Festival of Museum Theatre

The Come Alive Festival involves students from secondary schools in the ACT visiting the National Library or the National Portrait Gallery; selecting a character, object or event; and devising their own performance piece in response to the items in the national collection. Conceived by drama teacher Peter Wilkins, the festival, now in its 15th year, picks up on the rich resources in our national collections.

TEDxCanberra

TEDxCanberra’s flagship event is back this November, promising to shine a light on local talent, while tackling the issues that matter most.

Taking place on Friday 1 November at the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA), some of Canberra’s best ideas will be showcased, acting as a platform for up-and-coming changemakers and artists. With an epic line-up of speakers and performers planned, it will be the ultimate celebration of great ideas on science, technology, arts, culture, and the humanities.

Art Show to Support Dementia Australia

As dementia continues to impact families across Australia, local woman Belle Hogg is turning her personal journey with her mother’s Alzheimer’s Dementia into a heartfelt fundraising initiative.

Holding an art show on Friday 1 November, you can expect an afternoon of creativity, connection, and community support. There will also be happy hour drinks and guests are encouraged to explore and buy a beautiful piece of art donated by some wonderful local artists. All proceeds will go towards Dementia Australia.

Haunted Horrors at Monster Kitchen & Bar

This is a spine-chilling event for all of the foodies out there.

Renowned Sydney event company Applause Now is taking over the Monster Kitchen with a thrilling three-course dinner crafted by Head Chef David Wykes on Halloween – where suspense, intrigue and food collide in a night of mystery.

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet in recital

This award-winning French pianist is celebrated as one of the greatest pianists of our time. And he’s coming to Canberra.

Performing iconic works by Claude Debussy and Robert Schumann, he will bring to life some of the most evocative and poetic impressionist and romantic works for piano ever written in his much-anticipated stop.

Exhibitions

Garden Promenade

Featuring textile works by Sharon Peoples, this exhibition speculates on what could have been if Sarah Sophia Banks had travelled to Australia instead of only her brother, Sir Joseph Banks.

Sarah Sophia Banks spent much of her time advancing Joseph’s career while building her own priceless collection of coins, medals, visiting cards, satirical prints and print ephemera. She had an ‘eyebrow-raising fashion sense’ and was often described as a ‘fashion whip’. Artist Sharon Peoples focuses on motifs of plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks, such as flannel flowers, grevilleas and banksias using the live collection of the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

Creative Connections with Nature

Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition celebrates female and non-binary artists from the ACT region who use abstraction and design principles to explore colour perception and spatial relationships, highlighting the ways artists approach colour, geometry, and form.

While the artists in the exhibition explore similar visual terrain, embracing non-objective abstraction, repetition and pattern, their underlying conceptual investigations and influences vary and include post-colonial and feminist frameworks, climate activism, architecture, memory, extended pictorial space, mindfulness, and sensory engagement with the materials. The exhibition investigates regeneration, exploring the influence of traditional craft disciplines on contemporary art practice.

Island Hopping: A Solo Show by Jeffrey Sarmiento

Known for his creative practice exploring cultural identity and the graphic image in glass, Jeffrey Sarmiento embeds layers of information in his intricately constructed objects, sculptures and public commissions.

An expert in kiln formed and digital fabricated glass, he uses cutting and pasting of printed glass lenticular imagery and within the transparent medium, allowing imagery to swim within the pieces. Head along to the Canberra Glassworks to see his work, which helps him to expose complex narratives and create new ways of seeing.

Mythica Ignota: Solo Exhibition by Elliat Rich

Showcasing new work developed during Elliat Rich’s residency at Canberra Glassworks throughout 2024, Mythica Ignota uses mythology as a framework to nest scientific observation and more-than-human orientated values with artefact and narrative.

Curated by Aimee Frodsham, in this exhibition Alice Springs designer Elliat Rich taps into ancient and future ways of seeing the world.

ICN (iCompete Natural) is the world leader in natural bodybuilding and physique contests, welcoming all members of the fitness community.

Hosted at the Australian Intitute of Sport (AIS), this sounds like a fun family day out watching athletes compete in categories such as Fitness, Sports Model, Classic Physique, Bodybuilding and much more. Community Tennis Day 2024

This free community event will be the place to check out and experience what the Summer of Tennis has in store.

Kids will have fun in free Tennis Hot Shots classes by Tennis World Canberra, ballkid activities, roaming characters, face painting and glitter tattoos while adults can take part in Cardio Tennis classes, or Pop Tennis. Off court, there will be a range of food options available, tunes from a local DJ, free seated massages from CBR Massage, and the chance to grab a photo with the Australian Open trophies! Plant Propagation Workshop

Jane, Meet Gather Collect’s resident plant person, will lead a two-hour workshop on indoor plant propagation.

You’ll learn about propagating in water and in soil and how to transition your babies into larger pots.
