Did someone say ‘Exclusive backstage access?’ Canberra Theatre Centre is offering a rare chance to go behind the curtain

Posted on

Ever wondered what it’s like behind the curtain of the Canberra Theatre Centre? This May, you can get exclusive backstage access.

Opening its doors and inviting visitors to explore the ACT’s premier performing arts venue from a whole new perspective, the Canberra Theatre Centre will be hosting a free Open Day on Saturday 10 May as part of their 60th anniversary celebrations this year.

As you wander the halls of the iconic venue, you’ll be able to experience what it’s like to stand on The Playhouse stage, learn about how your favourite productions come to life behind-the-scenes and make your way through the dressing rooms which have played host to some of the world’s biggest names over the past six decades.

“Canberra Theatre Centre is the oldest performing arts centre in the country with a rich history of hosting some of Australia’s most beloved stars and productions and I cannot wait to welcome the community for a behind-the-scenes look inside our beautiful venues,” says Canberra Theatre Centre Director, Alex Budd.

Plus, there will be food trucks on site, some sweet treats to choose from, and plenty of other activities to keep the whole family entertained.

And that’s just the beginning. The Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG) are also joining the party with a range of free activities from 10 am until 4 pm on the same day. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sidney Nolan’s gift to the nation, you can join curator-led tours of the Nolan Gallery, view conservation works in action, paint your own masterpiece and take part in the Where’s Ned?” treasure hunt!

And, because it wouldn’t be a birthday party without cake, there will be Nolan 50th cupcakes available for the first 50 people who attend.

Finally (because if that wasn’t enough), the Canberra Theatre Centre will also be hosting a dazzling post-show celebration after The Australian Ballet’s performance of Carmen in June – exactly 60 years to the day since the national Ballet company performed at the venue’s opening gala back in 1965.

Tickets to the post-show celebration are on sale now and are exclusively available to those who attend Carmen on Friday 20 June.

Have we mentioned that the Open Day is completely free? Just make sure to register to secure your spot and be part of the celebration!
