We go inside SiSU, Deakin’s new luxurious science-led wellness studio

Pilates, psychology, and nervous system care: Deakin’s new wellness destination is blending science and support in one luxurious spot.

All about creating a truly holistic approach to health and wellbeing, SiSU has officially opened its doors to offer Canberra locals a smarter, science-backed way to feel better physically, emotionally and mentally.

Combining movement, psychology and recovery services under one roof, the space was founded by lifelong friends and business partners Lia McInnis and Camille Bateman and is built on the belief that true wellbeing means supporting both the body and the nervous system.

SiSU is all about smarter, science-backed ways to feel better physically, emotionally and mentally.

As a practicing psychologist for over 20 years, Lia has distilled decades of clinical experience into one cohesive model for SiSU – and in a busy world where feeling truly ‘well’ feels like a distant dream, it’s changing the game for anyone seeking more from their health.

“The name SiSU comes from a Finnish word meaning strength, grit and determination in the face of challenge. It’s a fitting name for a space designed to help people grow, reset and thrive,” explains Lia.

“I truly believe that with the right support, we can all live at our best. That’s why SiSU Canberra is here; to help you reach your optimal self through services that promote strength, clarity and self-awareness in a space that feels empowering, safe and grounded.”

Founders Lia McInnis and Camille Bateman.

Part spa, part studio and part psychology clinic, the services at SiSU include expert-led reformer and mat Pilates, 24/7 PODs (Pilates on Demand) and yoga for those seeking a mindful way to move their body. But unlike other Canberra Pilates and yoga studios, SiSu has a unique approach to the curated menu of movement – the team uses a trauma-informed method, weaving it into every element of the studio experience.

All the yoga and Pilates Instructors are trained in trauma-informed practice, and the movement offerings have been carefully selected for their ability to regulate the nervous system, shifting the body out of chronic stress and into a state of rest, recovery and resilience.

Pilates is just one of the many offerings at SiSU.

The team at SiSU are also committed to the wellbeing of frontline workers and veterans, offering tailored movement and therapy programs, including service-dog-friendly classes.

Meanwhile, the infrared sauna, ice bath and showers for hot/cold contrast therapy, sensory reduction pods, and two next-generation massage chairs are zen-inducing amenities that promote both physical and psychological well-being.

For those seeking support in the mental health space, services include individual therapy, couples counselling and small group programs focused on practical, evidence-based strategies to help people manage anxiety, trauma, stress and life transitions in a supportive, accessible environment.

If that’s not enough, SiSU is also preparing to launch SiSU Reset: Canberra’s first dedicated nervous system reset program.

Designed for people who feel stuck, on edge or depleted even when they’re “doing all the right things,” the innovative program addresses nervous system dysregulation – often the missing link behind persistent symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, low mood or physical tension.

“At SiSU we are approaching persistent health problems – like anxiety, depression, burnout and just sheer life exhaustion – from not just a top-down approach but also a bottom-up approach, meaning we are teaching people how to soothe, calm and regulate their own nervous system with a range of exercises and movements,” explains Camille.

And with luxurious interiors that lean into soft, earthy hues, natural textures and calming elements, it sounds like the perfect place to find that peaceful pause you need – whatever that may be.
