Raising money and eyebrows at Cupid’s Undie Run

Posted on

On Valentine’s Day weekend, both Canberra’s exhibitionists and charitably-minded alike will have a great opportunity to raise money (and probably a few eyebrows) at the Valentines Day-centric Cupid’s Undie Run.

2017 will be the third year the event has been held, expanding from two cities in 2016 to 14 held nationwide this year. The run is raising money for The Children’s Tumour Foundation of Australia (CTF), a charity that focuses its resources on finding effective treatments for neurofibromatosis – a debilitating disease caused by faulty genes that affect 1 in every 3000 births.

An estimated 7000 Australians are currently living with the disorder, with no known cure.

“Cupid’s Undie Run is the world’s largest organised underwear run serving as an international fundraiser,” says Robert Palmer from CTF.

Being that it will be the first undie run in Canberra (the first sanctioned one at least…), organisers are hoping for around 80 runners, but if Canberrans are as enthusiastic about getting their kit off as I think they are, I think we’ll be able to do better.

Participants are encouraged to run in either their favourite undergarments or some kind of fancy dress – Cupid being a popular choice that can combine the two for those who are keen!

So far they’ve raised almost $71,000 but are hoping to raise $375,000 in total.

SO WHAT’S INVOLVED?

The event will start with a pre-run party at 12pm, followed by the run itself – a 1.5(ish) kilometre frolic. Awards will then be given to the top fundraisers, after which the real party starts. The course through Commonwealth Park is yet to be confirmed, but any Canberra runner knows there are no lack of scenic options there.
