Ultimate Frisbee

Posted on

Ultimate is a self-refereed, non-contact, team sport; and is played single sex and mixed.

It combines elements of netball and American football in a fast-paced game.  The aim of the game is to catch the disc in an endzone at the opposite end of the field.

There are seven players a-side on the field, plus substitutes who can come on at the end of each point. Players cannot run with the disc. Once a player catches the disc, they must stop and throw it within 10 seconds. If the disc touches the ground, goes out of bounds or is intercepted, then there is a turn-over. Games are played on a field the same length as a soccer field but slightly narrower with 18m endzones at each end. Games are usually played to 17 goals or 90 minutes whichever comes first.

Ultimate is played single sex (open’s and women’s) and mixed. Canberra Ultimate’s current league is played as mixed sex; typically played with 4 males : 3 females on the field. In conjunction with the clubs, Canberra Ultimate is looking to offer men’s and women’s competitions in the near future.

As Ultimate is a self-refereed sport it is very affordable. Ultimate is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission.
