Five walks in the city to duck out to during your lunch break

Posted on

Looking to stretch your legs but don’t have the time? Here are five walks in the city that aren’t too far away!

Trust us, we’ve been there. It starts with the pining glances outside those clear windows before ending with the back aches from sitting in one spot for too long.

Here are five quick walks (from shortest to longest) to head out to during your lunch break so you can get that much-needed breath of fresh air. Feeling cooped up? Let’s change that.

Floriade Walking Trail

We would be making a fool out of ourselves if we didn’t mention Floriade. After two years of reduced Floriade events, it’s made the best comeback this year! Due to this, parking has become slightly tricky. The bright side? They’ve created a colourful walking trail to guide your way, perfect for a lunchtime getaway.

Follow the floral sticker on the ground, or jump from planter box to planter box, each filled with enough flowers to make anyone smile.

With Floriade only open until Sunday 16 October 16, we highly recommend taking a stroll and enjoying the blooms while they last!

Walk time: 15 minutes one way or 30 minutes in total.

Haig Park

With green lawns as far as the eye can see, you’re sure to find some serenity at Haig Park. Adorned with 14 rows of tall, sweeping trees, be sure to stop and take a breath of fresh air as you stretch your limbs.

With spring’s much anticipated arrival and the sun (finally!) beginning to carry a little bite, we can’t think of a better place to rejuvenate before heading back to that desk.

Walk time: 20 minutes to Haig Park one way or 40 minutes in total.

ANU North Oval

Are you currently studying or working at the Australian National University (ANU)? If so, you may have heard of the North Oval. Alternatively, we have no doubt you’ve driven past it at some point!

Home to the ANU cricket and rugby clubs, this oval sits snugly around the corner from New Acton, perfect for you to get that much needed change of scenery.

Take a stroll and enjoy the Spring breeze as you let down your (proverbial) hair!

Walk time: 20 minutes one way or 40 minutes in total.

Acton Waterfront: West Lake

In need of a walk but not too keen on endless greens? Or is a change of scenery in the cards? Perhaps you’ll like this walk to the Acton Waterfront.

Now, we know it’s not an ocean, with dunes of sand cresting the horizon, but we’re sure you’ll love this gorgeous little lake walk all the same.

Take a stroll around the lake and let the click clack of your shoes on the concrete soothe your soul.

Heels off, sneakers on, we’ve just found your next favourite lunchtime hideaway.

Walk time: 40 minutes one way or 1hr and 20 minutes.

Mount Ainslie

Unless you’re a super walker, unfortunately we don’t think you’ll manage to fit this round trip into your lunch break – unless you’re gifted with a long one (how lucky!). However, situated 7 kms from the heart of New Acton it’s a short (10 minute) drive away!

Mount Ainslie provides a bunch of beautiful trails both up and around the mountain, most of which is shaded by giant gum trees.

Once you get to the top, be sure to stop and enjoy that stunning view of our little city – it’s well worth the walk!
