Get ACTIVE: a year of free fitness

Posted on

Following the success of ACTIVE Week and our ACTIVE Days, we’re taking things to the next level. Introducing HerCanberra’s Get ACTIVE—an entire year of free fitness activities.

In 2017, as part of our HerCanberra ACTIVE initiative, we launched ACTIVE Week—a week that saw us team up with sporting groups and health and fitness providers to give Canberra women access to more than 60 free ways to get moving.

That was followed by a second ACTIVE Week and a series of ACTIVE Days, all geared towards encouraging activity in a range of forms—whether that was trying basketball for the first time, taking a dance class, or joining other mums for a walk about the lake with their prams.

Now, in the lead up to Women’s Health Week, we’re proud to announce that we’re taking things to the next level. Introducing HerCanberra’s Get ACTIVE—an entire year of free fitness activities. That’s right, with the support of the ACT Government, we will be giving you access to one free activity per week for the next year. What better way to kick off spring, hey!?

Fittingly, we’ll be launching Get ACTIVE during Women’s Health Week (2 to 6 September). Did you know that the two biggest barriers for women not maintaining a healthy lifestyle are ‘lack of time’ and ‘health not being a priority’? Well, there’s no better time to do something for your health and start making positive changes that can last a lifetime.

Next week, we’ll be sharing the first two months of activities so you can plan ahead and book into the activities that interest you, but in the meantime, we’re excited to be celebrating Women’s Health Week—and the upcoming launch of Get ACTIVE—with a series of free events from our friends at DC Fit.

Oh, and if you’re a fitness provider or sporting organisation keen to help Canberra Get ACTIVE, scroll down—we’re keen to get as many activities on board as possible!

Hey, that’s me! Come Zumba with me for free on Wednesday morning!

DC Fit fitness classes

DC Fit fitness classes offer a unique selection of training styles that focus on toning, cardio, strength and form. All classes incorporate music specific to the workout and focus on the development of adult fitness across all ages and abilities.

You can choose from Bounce, Barre, Hip Hop, Zumba, Tap, Heels, Limbering, Contemporary and Ballet (various levels of each available). The dance-based fitness classes are a great way to get social and get fit in a fun and supportive environment.

You do NOT need to be a dancer or have any kind of dance experience. The classes are for all ages, shapes, sizes and levels of ability. Trust me! I teach the 9:30 am Wednesday class Zumba class, and we have people ranging from mid-twenties to late-seventies (hi Marie, if you’re reading this!)

So, grab a friend and sign up for a class for free. Book your FREE class online at dance-central.com.au/dc-fit and be sure to enter your free class promotional code – FIRSTCLASS – at checkout. Please note that promotional codes are only available to use via your desktop browsers, NOT the MINDBODY app. The offer expires at midnight on 6 September 2019.

Are you… Strong as a Mother?

Dance Central is offering another fitness freebie in the form of their popular Strong as a Mother Workshop.

Julie Scheer will lead you through a gentle program of limbering—which works on the flexibility of your joints and muscles—along with a series of specialised pelvic floor strengthening exercises designed to restore control to your pelvic floor.

The class is scheduled for Thursday, 5 September from 7.30pm—get in quick and book your place at dance-central.com.au/dc-fit/.

ARE YOU KEEN TO HELP CANBERRA GET ACTIVE?

When it comes to fitness, it’s not a one-size-fits-all—some of us like to run, others would rather stick pins in their eyes. Some love nothing more than ball sports, whereas others can’t live without Crossfit. We want to give our readers the opportunity to try the huge diversity of activities that Canberra has to offer—and that’s where you come in.

We’re asking sporting groups and health and fitness providers, to give our readers the opportunity to participate in an activity for free as part of our year-long Get ACTIVE series.

From our readers’ perspective, it’s a chance to try a new sport, class or activity at no cost, without the hassle of finding friends to come along or mustering the courage to go it alone. It’s taking the intimidation factor out of trying something new, because we’re all in it together.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

The chance to put yourself in from of our audience of 130,000+ unique readers a month—most of whom are Canberra women between 20 and 50.

We want as many women in Canberra to get active—with you. We want them to fall in love with a new way of moving their body, or an old, forgotten favourite. We want them to sweat, have fun, and connect with themselves, each other, and you.

SOUND GOOD?

Great. We just need to know a little bit more about the activity you’d like to offer. It could be anything, including:

  • Staging a free ‘come and try’ session/s for your sport or activity
  • Providing a free class pass
  • Offering a free trial
  • Anything else that gives people a chance to get active in a low risk and accessible environment.

Simply fill in this handy form and we’ll be in touch! If you want to be involved, but you’re just not quite sure how, drop us a line at belinda@hercanberra.com.au and we’ll work with you to come up with something that’s right for your business.

We can’t wait to get ACTIVE with you.
