Inside The H Dispensary: Canberra’s long-standing natural health destination enters a new era

Posted on

Nestled in leafy Griffith, The H Dispensary has long been a quiet fixture in Canberra’s natural health scene.

Recently named Clinic of the Year by the Australian Traditional Medicine Society, the recognition marks a new chapter for a business that’s been supporting local families for nearly four decades.

First opening in 1987 as The Hierophant – a name inspired by the tarot card symbolising a bridge between the spiritual and the everyday – the clinic has built a loyal following for its personalised, holistic approach to health.

Now, as it approaches its 40th year, The H Dispensary is evolving.

Founded by Timothy Thomas and Kim Dudley as a place where people could access both traditional wisdom and contemporary thinking, the clinic has always focused on herbs, homeopathy and whole-person care.

The shift from The Hierophant to ‘The H’ in 2025 reflects a desire to make that knowledge more accessible to a new generation – while still honouring the community that’s been part of the journey from the beginning.

Offering more than 800 homeopathic remedies and practitioner-grade formulations, The H has helped generations of locals with health concerns that range from gut health to chronic pain, allergies to mental health and even sleep.

For Tim, he believes that it’s this approach to ancient wisdom and modern science that has seen The H become a longstanding sanctuary for so many people.

“Natural medicine works in partnership with the body, supporting its innate ability to heal and return to balance. Rooted in nature, these remedies help restore harmony across the body, mind, and spirit – a holistic approach to healing,” he explains.

“Natural medicine can treat everything; it always did and it always will.”

Working alongside Tim is General Manager Brenda Rogers.

Part of a new ownership group shaping the evolution of the practice, she is one of The H’s highly qualified practitioners providing services that include energy healing, fertility coaching, and homeopathy.

“There’s a whole stack of people in Canberra for whom we’ll always be The Hierophant,” says Brenda.

“We wanted to honour that, while also stepping into what comes next. The ‘H’ still carries that history – but it also speaks to healing, happiness, herbs, homeopathy and health.”

A clinical naturopath and nutritionist with more than 35 years’ experience, Brenda focuses on women’s health – a passion that has followed her throughout her career.

“I specialise in menopause and perimenopause and supporting women through that process,” she explains.

“I help women through the emotional journey from reproductive woman to non-reproductive woman.”

She supports clients through nervous system regulation, herbal medicine, nutrition and coaching – aiming to treat both mind and body.

Over the years, the team has supported patients through a wide range of complex health challenges, often working alongside conventional care to provide complementary support.

And with each practitioner offering thoughtful, tailored care, clients and customers can experience everything from one-on-one consultations and guidance in-store, to the space to explore the shelves of one of the largest dispensaries in the Southern Hemisphere.

“The average person doesn’t know that there are 10 alternatives they can try that are as equally effective,” says Brenda.

“People come to us for solutions, and some of those are simple, but we can do some amazing work with the more chronic diseases. People still need to see their doctor, but we can help.”

While deeply rooted in the Canberra community, The H has also become something of a destination, with visitors stopping in en route between Sydney and Melbourne or while visiting family in the capital.

Helping people across Australia, as they look to the future, accessibility and education are front of mind for Tim and Brenda. The recent launch of an online store and live-streamed workshops is part of a broader push to reach beyond the clinic walls, while continuing to support both patients and practitioners.

The team remains committed to its holistic approach – one that considers the individual, not just the symptoms – and aims to show even more people the power of natural medicine.

“As Edward Bach said, ‘Treat the person not the disease’,” says Tim.

“He consistently expressed when we work in harmony with nature, rather than trying to control it, true healing can unfold.”

“We want to connect with more health professionals and share what we know,” adds Brenda.

“There’s a real opportunity for natural medicine to sit alongside conventional care in a meaningful way.”
