Make your move these winter holidays with Dance Central

If school holidays have snuck up on you, you’re not alone. But if there’s a dancer in your family, Dance Central (DC) has a fun-packed program from 8 to 12 July that’ll stretch their limits. And it’s not too late to book in!
Any dancer will tell you that performing is about more than moves. Yes, you need technical skills but it’s also about confidence and presentation. It’s about selling it.
DC’s Winter Holiday Program ticks all the boxes. From Monday 8 to Friday 12 July, dancers aged seven to 16 years will elevate their skills with daily dance classes in Musical Theatre Jazz, Acro, Contemporary and Hip Hop from acclaimed instructors Liana Tsioulos and Gen Hall.
“We are so excited that our students will have the opportunity to learn from such experienced dancers,” says Julie Scheer, DC’s director.
“Liana trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre Summer School, with stints at the Playhouse in Oahu, Hawaii and is currently Director of The Lab Performing Arts in Sydney. Gen is one of our very own Elite Troupe alums and a graduate of Musical Theatre at ED5 International in Sydney.”

But that’s not all—each afternoon, there’ll be a range of workshops aimed at boosting confidence, with lessons including goal-setting, modelling, deportment, catwalk training, basic TVC model acting training, and even a make-up course and application by Canberra Makeup Academy (CMA).
To ensure classes are age-appropriate, they’ll be divided into two levels: 7 to 11 years (Beginner/Intermediate level) and 12 to 16 years (Intermediate/Advanced level). The program runs from 9am to 5pm each day, and places are limited to just 25 spots in each level.
The week brings together all of Julie’s years of experience in fashion, model management, public relations and dance, and begins with a #Goturback Workshop on Monday, which is all about building confidence, a positive mindset, and self-love and care rituals.
“At DC, we see themes like self-awareness, self-belief, respect for others, and teamwork continually surface through the power of dance. It’s the perfect way to begin a week that’s all about exploring potential,” says Julie.
Tuesday sees students taking their first steps into the world of modelling. They’ll learn how to present themselves, receive practical guidance on what to do in a casting, as well as model etiquette/deportment, grooming, catwalk training, and an introduction to stills with a photographic shoot. They’ll find out how to take a killer headshot and group shot, and prepare for on-camera auditions with an acting workshop.

“Wednesday is set to be lots of fun, and we know our pre-teens and teens are going to love it!” says Julie.
“Canberra Makeup Academy will be running a photographic make-up course, and each student will have their photographic make-up professionally done.”
Students will also continue their learning in stills and on-camera work.
On Thursday afternoon, it’s time for a little downtime, with students walking to and from Hoyts Woden to watch ‘Secret Life of Pets 2’ (rated PG). Entry to the movie, a snack pack, and supervision by DC staff is all included.
Then on Friday, it all comes together in a mock audition experience and show case afternoon.
“This session will commence with a workshop which will give students insights, tips and tricks to help them perform their very best in an audition,” says Julie.
“Students will be given a choreography coaching session to make up their own 30-second solo, duo or trio which they will perform in their audition. The 12-16 year-old group will also get to stage and film their very own music video clip with Liana that they get to keep and add to their dance portfolio.”
So, if you’re keen for your kids’ school holidays to be enjoyable, as well as a learning experience, DC’s Winter Holiday Program may be just what you’re looking for. Not only will they have a fun-packed week, they’ll also take away skills that will last a lifetime.
