37 reasons to attend the Heat Picnic Fiesta

Posted on

While this week might be hot, hot, hot, this Saturday will be heating up for another reason.

A collaboration between the team who brought you 2017’s Sunwaves Festival, the City Renewal Authority and no less than six Latin American embassies, Heat Picnic Fiesta this Saturday 19 January promises six packed hours of music, dance, food and family-friendly fun.

“Heat Picnic Fiesta is designed to bring together Canberra’s diverse and multicultural community through a series of activities and events that promote and celebrate the contribution of Hispanic / Latin American culture to the Canberra region,” explains Julian Bahamon, one of the organisers behind Heat, who says that the idea for the picnic fiesta came from the popularity of Latin music in Australia.

“We started thinking about how Latin culture positively influences the daily lives of many Australians with vibrancy, happiness, music, food and entertainment,” he says. “Big names like Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam, J-Balvin have managed to capture the hearts of many us Australians. What about Luis Fonsi with Despacito? I think we all had a good time singing it!”

This led Julian and his team to dream up their own celebration of Latin music and dance – a showcase of Canberra’s diverse and multicultural arts scene. Luckily the embassies of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador and Cuba shared Julian’s enthusiasm and so the Heat Picnic Fiesta was born.

A jam-packed day out for the whole family, Heat includes sixteen dance and musical performances, nine food vendors, two bars and 11 hands-on activity stations for kids of all ages.

“We brought together the best Latin American talent in town,” explains Julian. “It’s the first time we see our amazing bands, dance studios, all together in a festival. There is going to be lots of food options and plenty of activities for people to enjoy the day.”

Thought about dipping your toe into the various styles of Latin dance this year? Keep your eye on the main stage for showcases of Zumba, Salsa Choke, Salsa Suelta and more, as well as performances from Canberra’s top Latin dance schools – Salsabor Dance Studio, Subsdance Dance Studio and Kokoloco Dance Studio.

If it’s music you’re after, there will be live performances mixed amongst the dancing, with acts like Minerva Chudnovsky, Momposina, Alli & Mario, Cuban Son, Yakumama, Funky Trop and live DJs taking the stage across the afternoon.

To keep you fuelled and dancing there will be food stalls from Beach Burrito, Charcoal Parrilla, Bare Bones BBQ, Smokey G’s, Cannoli Brothers, Hungry Brown Cow, La Empanada, Super Bar and The Pizza Trailer as well as two bars to keep you hydrated.

And as for those aforementioned little ones, keep them entertained and active with fun and inventive games such as Soccer Darts, Archery Combat, Sumo Suits, Inflatable Twister, Wrecking Ball, a Velcro Wall, jumping castles, Finish the Image, Dragon Colouring, a sculpture garden and a photo treasure hunt.

So pack a picnic blanket, hats, sunscreen and your dancing shoes and head to Glebe Park this Saturday at midday for summer’s biggest fiesta!
