A little romance, a lot of brilliance: the French Film Festival returns to Canberra
Posted on
Oui, oui, the Alliance Française French Film Festival is returning to Palace Electric Cinema for another year, bringing a carefully curated line-up of 38 films.
Taking place from Thursday 5 March until Wednesday 8 April, this year celebrates the very best of French storytelling – from Cannes favourites and literary adaptations to bold contemporary voices and box-office hits.
The largest celebration of French cinema outside France, the festival has earned a loyal following for good reason. And this year’s program is not to be missed.
Featuring evocative adaptations, uplifting crowd-pleasers and acclaimed works from some of the world’s most celebrated filmmakers (alongside performances from international stars including Angelina Jolie and Jodie Foster), women are front and centre in this year’s program, with 10 films directed by female filmmakers and no shortage of French star power on screen.
Films inspired by true stories and celebrated literary works also feature strongly in this year’s program. Adaptations such as Jean Valjean, inspired by Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, and The Stranger, based on Albert Camus’ iconic novel and directed by François Ozon, demonstrate the enduring power of classic storytelling on screen.
“This year offers an exceptional variety of genres and storytelling styles,” says Alliance Française de Canberra Director Nabila Aliane.
“I found myself genuinely moved and inspired by most of the films.”
But with such a rich and varied selection, choosing where to begin can be daunting. To help narrow it down, here Nabila shares her personal highlights from the program.
What not to miss
A Dash of Love

One of the most moving selections is A Dash of Love, a deeply human story about two people living with disabilities and illness. Its tender portrayal of vulnerability, connection and resilience offers a reminder that these experiences are universal.
Couture

Couture follows the intertwined journeys of three women from very different backgrounds who find themselves facing similar struggles. The film weaves their stories into a powerful reflection on identity, ambition and solidarity.
Once Upon a Time Michel Legrand

Music lovers will be drawn to Once Upon a Time Michel Legrand, a beautifully crafted tribute to one of France’s most iconic composers. The film captures Michel Legrand’s creative genius and the lasting influence of his work with warmth and intimacy.
The Moneymaker

For those who enjoy bold storytelling, The Moneymaker delivers a gripping and unexpected tale, following an immigrant whose life takes an intense turn when he becomes a counterfeiter. It’s surprising, tightly paced and masterfully made.
Dog 51

Technology and ethics take centre stage in Dog 51, which explores a futuristic Paris controlled by powerful artificial intelligence – a topic that feels especially timely.
The Richest Woman in the World

The Richest Woman in the World invites viewers into a thought-provoking debate about wealth, perception and societal judgment, encouraging audiences to reflect on their own assumptions. It’s inspired by the life of Liliane Bettencourt; a reminder that reality can be just as extraordinary as fiction.
The Little Sister

Rounding out the highlights is The Little Sister, a poignant and beautifully acted story of a young immigrant woman navigating identity, faith and desire. It’s a film that lingers long after the credits roll.
