Robots, food trucks, and rockets: Celebrate 80 years of ANU with a massive campus-wide party

The Australian National University (ANU) has been educating students for eight decades, becoming an important part of Canberra and one of Australia’s leading universities.
Now, as ANU marks its 80th birthday, you’re invited to celebrate. On Saturday 15 August, come along to ANU Community Day to discover a different side of the campus and uncover the stories and histories that have made ANU what it is.
From 10 am until 4 pm, Kambri precinct will be coming to life – and there will be something for all ages.
At the Marie Reay Teaching Centre, Curiosity Unleashed will see live science shows, face painting, interactive exhibits and more. For those taking the whole family along, this is the place to go.
Alongside exhibits from Questacon (which ANU helped establish) and the Canberra Reptile Zoo, there will be a range of workshops and exhibits to entertain and inform you, including science shows from ANU science communicators and performers, a marshmallow challenge and much more.
Make sure you don’t miss holographic chocolate being made and set aside some time to explore the ANU student art market.
Meanwhile, the Discovery Zone at the Lowitja O’Donoghue Cultural Centre is perfect for anyone curious about student creativity and innovation, history, politics, and the world around us.
View and read the stories of the handcrafted Australian of the Year trophies, meet Tappy the robot, learn how rainforests communicate, and check out screenings at the Cultural Centre Cinema, concluding at 4 pm with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
If you’re after some outdoor fun, head to Joplin Lane. You’ll find delicious meals, snacks and drinks, while live music will keep the lane vibing all day long. Other unmissable highlights? Think: a Bollywood-inspired workout, a Chinese calligraphy class, and the chance to build (and launch) your own paper rocket.
