Putting the spotlight on incredible women in the Canberra community

Posted on

Over the last two long years, women have played a key role keeping our families, community and city functioning.

Today, more than ever, we need to recognise and celebrate the women making significant contributions to our community.

Here’s your chance. Each year, the ACT Women’s Awards recognise and celebrate women in the ACT who improve the lives of women and girls.

There are three awards:

  • ACT Woman of the Year
  • ACT Young Woman of the Year (aged between 16 and 25 years)
  • ACT Senior Woman of the Year (aged 60 years and older)

Nominations close soon for the 2022 Awards. Nominees can come from any walk of life. Previous award winners have made contributions by supporting women in STEM, trades, social services, the disability sector, sports and many other fields.

In 2021, Dhani Gilbert took out ACT Young Woman of the Year. Dahni is a proud Wiradjuri woman who is passionate about empowering young people to embrace leadership and was an organiser for the first national Landcare Youth summit.

Liz Stephens was celebrated as 2021 ACT Senior Woman of the Year. Liz has made an outstanding contribution to improving the lives of queer women through her work as Vice President of Diversity ACT and coordinator of the Southside Women’s group, coordinating events and bringing together the community.

Sonam Choden was the ACT Woman of the Year in 2021. Sonam led her colleagues to achieve secure jobs and fair wages for the women employed as essential workers at Calvary Public Hospital.

You can read more about past winners on the Community Services Directorate website.

Nominations for the 2022 awards are open until midnight Sunday 23 January. Nominate a woman you know to recognise their extraordinary efforts through this online form.

The ACT Women’s Awards winners will be announced at a ceremony on Thursday 3 March in the lead up to International Women’s Day on 8 March.
