For the uninitiated, March is when Canberra comes alive. From the Enlighten Festival to International Women’s day, the Canberra Comedy Festival, and Pride Weekend, (plus all of the usual things happening around town) we promise that the start of autumn 2023 will keep you very busy. Don’t believe us? Read on.

Here’s our curated guide to what’s happening in Canberra (because this isn’t all of it. Not even close).

Enlighten

Illuminations @Enlighten Festival

Some of Canberra’s most loved and iconic buildings is lighting up once again for the Enlighten Festival. From Australian Parliament House; the National Library of Australia; the National Gallery of Australia; Questacon; the National Portrait Gallery; and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, expect a stunning display of light, sound and movement!

Enlighten Illuminations at Parliament House

As day turns to night, watch Parliament House light up with colourful animated scenes designed by Eggpicnic. Showcasing the birds, insects and gum trees found in the surrounding native gardens of Capital Hill, it will be accompanied by an immersive soundscape which brings the local landscape to life.

Before Us: Night Walk Through Time

This March, in Civic Square the T-Rex and friends reign supreme! As part of City Illuminations @Enlighten, you will discover and follow 18 illuminated finely crafted creatures after dark through City Walk and Civic Square. This outdoor and free, family-friendly exhibition trail will be open daily (and you’ll have the chance to encounter life-size puppets roving the city each night from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm).

Enlighten at the National Library

Head to the National Library to enjoy extended opening hours as the lawn is transformed into a play area complete with giant lawn games, hula hoops, face painting or watch a skipping rope demonstrations from Jazzy Jumpers. If you’re looking for food to go along wit your fun, grab a bite to eat from one of the food stalls or head to Bookplate Café to try a special Enlighten festival menu!

Pride Weekend

Honouring WorldPride in Sydney (the first time the global event has been staged in Australia and the first time in the southern hemisphere), Pride Weekend @ Enlighten will see a program bursting with events, all celebrating LGTBIQA+ pride and Canberra’s inclusive community—including the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, Illuminations @ Enlighten Festival, Lights! Canberra! Action! and more.

Taking place from Friday 10 until Sunday 12 March (the second weekend of Enlighten), the best part is it’s all free to attend.

Symphony in the Park

CBR GRRRLS To The Front

Taking place at premier live music venue The Basement on Saturday 4 March, CBR GRRRLS To The Front  is coming to the stage to lift the voices of female (and gender-diverse) artists while addressing the male-dominated nature of the music industry. Featuring VOIID (QLD), Box Dye , Masochist (NSW) and Pretty in Punk, you’d be mistaken if you think this mini-festival is just about the music. There will also be an educational element with stalls and vendors providing plenty of opportunities to support women outside of the music industry.

With representation from the ACT Women’s Legal Centre, Good Omen Goodeze, local artists, and more, on the night GRRRLS To The Front will also be supporting Share The Dignity and Girls Rock! Canberra—asking that anyone in attendance brings along toiletries to help women in need and donating $5 from ticket sales to give younger rockstars the opportunity to attend and learn at music camps.

International Women’s Day at Le Tres Bon

Looking to get out of the city this IWD? Make your way to one of the oldest French restaurants in the Canberra region, Le Très Bon. International Women’s Day 2023 at Poachers Pantry

In honour of this year’s theme, the Poachers Pantry will unite and empower women in regional NSW,  highlighting how politics and community can better support women living in the land. Panel discussions feature extraordinary women from the southern inland region, such as Sam Longmore, farmer and owner of OhBullDust and Slalom Water Skier. Strong Female Lead – International Women’s Day Screening at Dendy

In recognition of the sound of sexism in Australian politics, Dendy Cinema is screening, ‘Strong Female Lead.’ A profoundly moving account of the struggles faced by women in power, their discrimination and blatant harassment. Using archival footage, we see the attacks that characterised Gillard’s time in office and how she bravely fought them to inspire women across the globe. The film also explores the media and public response to our first and only female prime minister, shining the spotlight on both the immediate and long-term effects this had on Australian society.

IWD  International Women’s Day Braidwood Luncheon

Make your way to Braidwood this International Women’s Day for a free (yes, that’s right), luncheon at the Braidwood National Theatre. The IWD Luncheon will feature discussions by inspiring artists Alison Alder, whose exhibition ‘There are battles yet to win: Feminist Posters 1979 is currently showcased at the Rusten House arts centre Braidwood.

Love Letters

Correspondence is the key to this ultimately romantic story. From childhood, the friends communicate with each other through angst-ridden boarding school experiences, European adventures, failed marriages, and the ups and downs of career, Love Letters follows Andy and Melissa’s relationship as the sometimes-sweethearts/sometimes-friends go through periods of estrangement.

Love Letters explores how the written word can influence us to reimagine our reality and relationships.

Choir Boy

Choir Boy, by the Academy Award winning writer of Moonlight, Tarell Alvin McCraney, arrives at Canberra Theatre Centre in March on its Australian premiere season. The Tony Award nominated play is threaded throughout with soul-stirring a cappella gospel hymns as it explores the moving story of sexuality, race, hope, gospel music, and a young gay man finding his voice.

Jonathan Jones: untitled (walam-wunga.galang)

Created by renowned Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi artist, Jonathan Jones this is a collaborative project with Uncle Stan Grant Senior and Beatrice Murray that  emphasises the sophistication of Aboriginal agricultural economy, which was erased by colonial narratives of First Nation’s people as hunters-gatherers.

Floor Talk with Ali Aedy

Portrait23: Identity

This is portraiture, but not as you know it. Portrait23: Identity is a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, showcasing new work from multi-award-winning contemporary Australian artists and collectives working across every state and territory.

Twenty-three artists and collectives present dramatic, ambitious and thrilling work about who they are and what it means to represent themselves, their communities, histories and contemporary society. Amelia Mollett: Shorelines

Wrack and Salvage

Provoking questions in the face of the climate crisis—What do we value? What do we stand to lose? What will we see destroyed? What are we willing to sacrifice? What are we prepared to save?—this sculptural installation resembles the flying forms of flood debris.  A reflection on how we have responded to climate change, artist Jacqui Malins explores themes of loss, hope and resoultion.

earth unframed

This open exhibition uses the work of several artists to explore the concept of ‘earth’; our home, the environment, soil, land, fragility, strength or purpose.  The result is a mix of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and mixed media that uses imagination with a sense of play, political activism, boldness, experimentation, thoughtfulness, or contemplation.

Of The Body: Drill Hall Gallery

In Of The Body, composer Dan Walker draws on Renaissance art, music and science to explore our corporal form in a contemporary context. Comprised of six movements, each devoted to an anatomical part (the eyes, the hands, the mouth, the feet, the blood, and finally, the heart),  Of the Body traverses sex, sensuality, the senses and more, exploring what it means to be embodied in a digital age, our relationship to our corporeal form; our flesh and blood.

Le Nuove Musiche

Head along to this lunchtime concert to enjoy AJ America, mezzo-soprano & Ariana Odermatt, harpsichord, in a concert of music by Monteverdi and Caccini. Drawing largely on songs and monodies from Caccini’s 1602 collection (“Le nuove musiche”), these works are some of the earliest examples of the Italian “seconda practica”.

The Garifuna Collective (Belize)

Meet the Author: Allen Mawer in conversation with Martin Woods

500 years have now passed since Ferdinand Magellan’s famous voyage, the most audacious in maritime history—and in his new book East by West, Allen Mawer closely examines the historical sources, charts and eyewitness records, considering afresh what we know of Magellan and the details of his voyage.

In conversation with Allen will be Dr Martin Woods, former long-time Curator of Maps, at the National Library of Australia the event will be held in the Library Theatre and live-streamed via Zoom.
