Want to send off December in style? We’ve rounded up five Canberra experiences you need to have before the year ends.

What will you cross off the list first?

Try one of the many new places to eat and drink

Hungry to try something new? This year, over 112 new places to eat and drink have opened their doors – from fine dining to casual cafés – and to celebrate we’ve done the hard work and rounded up every new eatery that we’ve featured in our 2023 editions of ‘New Places To Eat’, sorted by region. With plenty of decadent, delicious, and innovative cuisine, the only question is where will you start? Just make sure to double-check their holiday opening hours!

Check out the exhibitions

We always forget how lucky we are in Canberra to have so many cultural institutions right on our doorstep – and this summer, the calendar is packed. Boasting everything from edgy photography to Egyptian artefacts, we’ve found 10 exhibitions you won’t want to miss. Spend a day exploring the museums and galleries while soaking in the cold air conditioning and thank us later.

Dance the night away at Kokomo’s

You read that right – iconic Canberra bar Kokomo’s has returned to the city. Closing its doors in 2021 to transform into Asian BBQ restaurant Wilma and cocktail bar The Pearl, local lovers of the cocktail bar have long been lamenting the tropical vibes, fun cocktails, and music that made a night out at Kokomo’s so. much. fun. But we have some exciting news: until Saturday 30  December you’ll be able to get that tropical contact high once again as Kokomo’s returns to its original location on the corner of Bunda and Genge Street. Blu Tang Clan anyone?

Live it up lakeside

With the warm weather FINALLY here, Canberran’s are flocking to the water – and why shouldn’t we live it up lakeside? From enjoying a coffee or wine at Margot to seeing some of Canberra’s most iconic attractions from the water, there’s plenty of things to do around Lake Burley Griffin this summer that don’t involve walking the Bridge to Bridge.

Pick up some seasonal produce at the markets

Summer means fresh berries, flowers, and iced drinks – and you can find all three at our local farmers markets. Perfect for impressing any guest this festive season, head to the Haig Park Village Markets in Braddon or the Capital Region Farmers Market to stock up and chat with local producers. Both are a hive of activity – and also prime locations to grab some coffee and brunch. Win/win.
