The way things have been going, one could probably be forgiven for not even blinking…
Grab your mittens, Canberra. Wintervention is back for 2021 and so is ice skating in the city.
You (still) can’t visit the French Alps or Japan’s famous ski slopes, but you can dial up the winter charm at the City Renewal Authority’s Wintervention festival which will take over Garema Place from 25 June to 11 July.
Featuring the beloved outdoor ice skating rink, market stalls and street food vendors, Wintervention is the perfect winter school holidays activity or date night inspiration.
“Civic Square, in Canberra’s city centre will once again be transformed into an open-air ice-skating arena,” says Malcolm Snow, CEO for the City Renewal Authority.
“No other mainland city around the country has a winter like Canberra with enchanting frosty mornings and snow-covered mountains visible from the city centre. This event is a great chance to get out of our winter bunkers and experience what our city has to offer over the colder months.”
The ice skating rink will be operating seven days a week, with bookings essential. Tickets are on sale now at canberra.starsonice.com.au/tickets. Prices range from $10 to $20 and family bundles are available from $59.
There will also be special Stars On Ice performances each Friday, Saturday and Sunday so you can see the professionals in action and pick up a few tips.
All other events and activities are free, however, attendees will be required to use the Check-in CBR app and maintain physical distancing for COVID-safety.
Each weekend of the festival, Wintervention markets will pop up in Garema Place—that’s Friday 25 to Sunday 27 June and Friday 2 to Sunday 4 July—offering a range of stalls from local and interstate makers, including craft, design, fashion and food. There will also be live entertainment.
“Whether you’re a skater or a spectator, Wintervention is a family-friendly event designed to embrace the Canberra chill around entertainment, activities, food, and market stalls,” says Malcolm.
“Daily music performances, hot drinks and food stalls are available for the school holiday crowd. Local foodie favourites will be joining the frosty fun and provide tasty treats and beverages, including the Tikka Stand, Neat St. Coffee, La Empanada and Big River Distilling.”
Expressions of interest are also open for city businesses to get involved with any ‘winter-inspired’ offers to be displayed on the Wintervention website.
