Eight ways new mums can find community and connection in Canberra

Posted on

Looking to find support, friendship and connection as a new mum?

Here are just some of the ways you can find community here in Canberra.

First Time Parent Groups (MACH)

The First Time Parent Group is a four-week program run by Canberra Health Services’ Maternal, Child and Family Health (MACH) nurses and/or midwives.

Available to first-time parents of infants from six weeks to under four months, these groups allow you to meet other first-time parents with babies of a similar age and discuss topics such as parenting, caring for yourself and your baby, and how to access services available to you in the community.

Majura Womens Group

Want to get some ‘you’ time, learn something new or relax and connect with other mothers?

Majura Womens Group is a wellbeing group designed for mothers with children aged 0–5 years, with a different activity run each week – everything from craft to exercise sessions.

It only costs a gold coin donation each week, and there is an adjunct childcare in the next room for children over 9 months (younger bubs stay with mum) so mums can get a break for a few hours.

Majura Womens Group meets at the Downer Community Centre every Wednesday morning during the school term.

The Southside Women’s Wellbeing Group

Running every Tuesday during the school term, the Southside Women’s Wellbeing Group welcomes women from all across Canberra (no matter if you’re a north-sider, south-sider, or somewhere in between), offering them the chance to connect, create, and recharge while little ones (aged zero to five) enjoy the adjunct childcare provided.

Each week brings something new to the table. From decorating your own doormat to making Halloween wreaths, painting drink tumblers, practising yoga, and learning from a women’s health physio, the sessions offer an exciting blend of creativity and wellness. Whether you’re feeling isolated, into DIY projects, or simply looking for some “me time,” this group promises something special for Canberra mums.

Giggle and Wiggle

Ideal for younger kids and their parents or carers, Giggle and Wiggle (0-2 years) sessions are held in various public libraries across Canberra. The best bit? They’re free!

Sing along to select songs, dance to the rhythm with your little one, and share rhymes that will make you both giggle and wiggle!

Giggle & Wiggle is absolutely free, but reservations are a must. Secure your spot and be sure to book for all children and adults attending.

After the session, stick around to meet other parents and carers or explore our library. It’s a great chance to build connections and make friends.
