From Jaws to Die Hard: The Q brings iconic films back to the big screen

Get ready to mark your calendars, Canberra film buffs! Southern Tablelands Art (STA) is taking us on a cinematic journey through time with their Screen 2025 Program that’s guaranteed to have you reaching for the popcorn.

Curated by Creative Director Gary Vehtic, this year-long program at The B at Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre (The Q) showcases five iconic films that have shaped our cultural landscape – and trust us, this is one screening series you won’t want to miss.

The series kicked off in February with The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with Mike Judge’s eerily prophetic comedy Idiocracy coming to screens in April. Follow average Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson), who wakes up 500 years in the future to discover he’s suddenly the smartest person alive. It’s a hilarious yet thought-provoking satire that might have you questioning if we’re already living in its dystopian future!

Just when you thought it was safe to make summer plans, STA brings us the 50th anniversary screening of Jaws in June. Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece that kept generations out of the water will have you gripping your armrests all over again with its iconic score and perfect tension. We’re going to need a bigger cinema seat!

In August, prepare for the psychological thrill ride of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. This groundbreaking film changed cinema forever with its shocking twists and that shower scene. We promise checking into this particular motel will be worth it!

As spring arrives, journey into the fantastical realm of Labyrinth in October. David Bowie’s Goblin King, Jim Henson’s incredible puppetry, and a magical maze create the perfect family adventure. You’ll be dancing the magic dance all the way home!

And because nothing says “Christmas spirit” quite like explosions and one-liners, December brings us the ultimate holiday action film – Die Hard. Bruce Willis’ John McClane will have you yippee-ki-yaying into the festive season with this beloved Christmas classic that still packs a punch after all these years.

All screenings take place at 4 pm at The B at Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre. From edge-of-your-seat thrillers to magical adventures, this curated collection celebrates the films that continue to captivate audiences decades after their release.

So gather your fellow film enthusiasts and experience these timeless classics the way they were meant to be seen – on the big screen. After all, life’s too short for small screens and ordinary movies!
