In high school, I came to Canberra, our nation’s capital, expecting a beacon of democracy….
As we emerge into a more sustainable, up-cycled world, it’s difficult to know exactly where to learn pertinent skills.
We all recycle (some more fervently than others) and many of us have veggie patches and shop at charity stores. However, even though many of us want to actively learn about living in a sustainable way, where do you go to learn the practical skills?
Hotel Hotel – you know, that insanely stylish, design award winning hotel in NewActon whose foyer is made from 100% reclaimed timber – is hosting a festival of learning, fixing and making – including a free market this Saturday – to help you up-skill for this brave new world.
It’s called Fix and Make.
At The Fix and Make markets, Hotel Hotel have brought together some of the most sustainably creative minds from NewActon and beyond to run a series of workshops and ‘how tos’ across a whole day, including making instruments from rubbish with Dylan Martorell, whittling life long chopsticks with award winning industrial designer Tom Skeehan (who recently made the chopsticks for XO) and sewing utility aprons from old jeans with Suzan Dlouhy.
Just in time for summer there’s also workshops on making ad hoc camp furniture from branches with Dale Hardiman and setting up swarm traps (safe houses for bees!) with Many Many and Honeyfingers.
As well as practical approaches, Fix and Make also includes a series of talks and panels.
One such event is a panel discussion on ‘The Ownership of Things’ with designer Trent Jansen, entrepreneur Bruce Jeffreys, historian, artist and writer Anne Brennan, and neuroscientist Dr Pascal Molenberghs that will discuss the philosophy and reality of owning objects with gentle guidance from Genevieve Jacobs of the ABC.
Aside from the educational aspects of the day, you can buy delicious food and drink from the following local, sustainable providers this Saturday at the Market:
Lark Hill Winery
Stone & Wood Brewery
Barrio Collective Coffee
Monster kitchen and bar
Močan & Green Grout
Parlour Wine Room
Smith’s Free Range Eggs
Beekeeper Dermot AsIs Sha’Non
Palace Cinema (choc tops!)
Juniper bar (cocktails!)
Choku Bai Jo
East Coast Wild Flowers
Hotel Hotel aims to “[bring] people together to actively question our consumption of and relationship with objects through the practical, the experimental and the philosophical [fix and make].”
